cherry eye
Re: cherry eye
A long time ago I had a young dog with cherry eye. I was told it would be involved to have it corrected. I sold her to a fellow and later he told me his vet just clipped it off, no problem.

Re: cherry eye
The correct & newest procedure is involved & can be expensive done by eye problem specialist. The trouble with clipping them off is,they need that tear duct to produce tears to keep the eye lubricated.Clipping can cause dry eye & the need for artificial tears or lube daily for life.

The correct terminology is......prolapsed third eyelid gland......Basically they tack the gland back in.

Re: cherry eye
The newest procedure is to make a new pocket to put the gland into make a few stitches till it heals & the stitches desolve. They use stitches that desolve slowly to build scar tissue & make the pocket stronger then the natural one.
That's how I understood it anyway. & yes it's expensive.
Here s a little something that I was told & really don't make sense to me but I'm not a vet.
She asked me if the dog had any vaccines lately & I said about 2 wks prior to the Cherry eye showing up.
Then she said they are seeing some corelation of timing of Cherry eye & vaccines. Stress maybe?

Re: cherry eye
It is moderately expensive at best to fix properly. I've had several clients with dogs who've had the procedure with good results. Are you near enough to a vet school to see about having it done there? That might save you some cash.

Re: cherry eye
I guess it depends on what you call moderate. My vet wouldn't do it because he knows how particular I am,he clips them off like mentioned above which is considerably cheaper.
He sent me to a specialist & they aren't cheap in my eyes not even moderately!!

Re: cherry eye
I have a friend who was given a nice pointer pup for free- It had cherry eye.
He consulted with 2 different vets. One said had to have the tear duct intact. Another said it did not need the particular duct- cut it out.
He decided to have them tucked in and sewn. One did start to pop back out but was sutured back in. And the AMAZING part to me is... This vet clinic did this surgery with anesthetics, meds, hospitalization, all for under $200. Sounded too good to be true. Ive seen the dog couple of times since. Hes done well with them holding shut.

Re: cherry eye
I had it taken care of on a yorkie...500.00. The problem is when they have one we were told the other side can and prob will do the same.. sure as **** 2 months after the surgery it did.
Re: cherry eye
i just remove them. what you are seeing is the gland of the third eyelid, that has prolapsed out of its "pocket". the concern over the tears has nothing to do with the tear duct, however. the gland produces up to 50% of the tears, so if removed, there is a chance the dog could develop what they call dry eye later in life. many dont, however, because the gland is not the sole source of tears. if they do, tears can be easily replaced by artificial means.
i wish i could get $1200 bucks to fix one of those! holy Crap!

Re: cherry eye
to remove the prolapsd gland on both eyes would be less than $100. it shouldnt take more than 15-20 minutes. and, if the pup is calm, you can even do it with them awake, you just numb the eye with topical proparacaine. course you have to consider i live in a small, rural community and county, so i have to keep thigs on the heap side.
i have never attempted the replacement procedure. the vet that i used to work for said he tried it once and they re-prolapsed.

Re: cherry eye
Dog DR maybe you should specialise, the Eye Center that did the dog I'm talking about has waiting lists & people from surrounding states & never lack clients.
All they do is eyes.Come to Ohio & you could have lines because nothing is ever as cheap as the prices you quote,I don't care where you go.
Besides there aren't too many I trust.Been using my vet for over 25 yrs & there are somethings he just won't touch but if I have a sick dog he is the one I would trust most.
He certainly is not cheap even though he has given me a break on a few things before.
I'm the same with my dogs as I am with myself I don't run to a vet or Dr for everything, only things I can't handle.
OBTW the eyes were done about 2 yrs ago & you can't tell there was ever a problem. If you had an eye problem would you go to a regular DR to handle it?
Just asking?
I have seen some eyes operated on by regular vets for Entropion (spelling) that looked worse afterwards then before.

Re: cherry eye
One of my dogs had cherry eye a few months back, and I spent $350 to have it corrected. Last month, while I was in Oklahoma on leave, the same thing happened with the other eye. I took him to the local vet, and expected to pay about the same thing. I was more than a little surprised when he removed it and only charged me $30. We were in and out in about 15 minutes. He explained that the pup may develop dry eye later in life, but he also said that he's never actually seen it happen. I will say this: the eye that had the gland removed looks much better that the one that was corrected.
