Water bowl/container ideas needed?
Water bowl/container ideas needed?
I use 2 rubber buckets, a 1 gallon and a 3 gallon for water in my dog kennel (1 english setter), the problem is when he plays he splashes his paws in the buckets for fun and I have to constantly refill them, I mean several times a day! Anyone have a water setup that he could drink from but not get his legs in to splash it out? I do not have access to an automatic water setup in this location!
Re: Water bowl/container ideas needed?
Are the buckets sitting on the ground? If so, could you raised them up so he can drink but not play in the water? You should be changing out the water every day just for health reasons.
Re: Water bowl/container ideas needed?
I change the water daily, but with him 5 times a day is needed, especially in the summer, he splashes to play, I had them raised and he raised up on hind legs to kick in them, I even added baby pool to play in, still got in his drink buckets? I am going to try large diameter pvc pipe plugged on ends and small cutout just his snout will go in to drink!

How much work or cost would it be to relocate his kennel closer to a water source or bring water to the kennel. If you can get water to the kennel you an pipe in a Lixit and that would slove your problem.

Re: Water bowl/container ideas needed?
When I have dogs that constantly play in their water or try to destroy their buckets I totally remove the bucket from the kennel. All dogs get out for a run 3 times a day and water is available in the play area. I have one dog that wants to destroy her bucket now and will probably never have water in her kennel again. Just not worth it. They learn fast that they need to get water when they are out.

One of my setters would stand in his Fortex water bucket eventually tipping it over.
Much like you, I put a horse trough in his kennel for him to lay in...water bucket is now okie-dokie.
Perhaps you need to take the bucket away for awhile and leave a trough in....small pool may not be the best.
Good Luck

We use these 25gal tubs from Tractor Supply for swimming.

And these for the water.

We haven't had any trouble with dogs dumping the water tubs as long as the swimming pools are full. Plus they are easy to clean and the water tubs are easy to break ice in the winter and do not crack.
