Eye Color for English Setter Puppy

Post by Elizabeth » Mon May 17, 2010 1:25 pm

Our English Setter gave birth to four healthy puppies five weeks ago. All of the puppies but one have dark eyes. The female has one dark eye and one light blue eye. The eye looks healthy and does not appear cloudy. She is now five weeks of age. How common is it for a setter to have two different colored eyes?

I can only speculate, but i would imagine about as likely as a person is to have two
different color eyes....rarely but not completely uncommon.
The second kick from a mule is of very little educational value - from Wing and Shot.

As long as it seems visual and anatomically normal, you should be fine. This is very common in some breeds, such as Siberian Husky.

I had an English Setter, bred in North Dakota that had eyes of two different colors. She had excellent eyesight and I was unable to detect any other abnormalities.

Thank you! I will be taking her Monday to our Veterinarian for her first puppy exam and vaccinations. Hopefully we will get a good report. I, myself have two different colored eyes which makes all of this rather funny.

Is there any chance a dog like this would have the same color eyes at say a year old if at 5a or 6a weeks one is dark and one is still blue or is it bound to stay dark? How likely genetic wise would this be to pass on as a dominant trait?

The pup I wrote about in the question lives with us. She is now 2 1/2 and her eye color never changed. She has a beautiful Blue eye and a beautiful brown eye.

I have a tight bred Miller dog like that. I haven't seen many other pointers that have this. I don't mind it, i probably would pick another one like it first out of a litter.

I have seen a setter like this and two pointers that I can remember. None of the three showed any kind of vision impairment.
