Member's Mark Exceed Recall

Post by wannabe » Mon Aug 10, 2009 7:06 pm

Does anyone know the details of the latest recall on Member's Mark Exceed? I just left Sam's Club and there wasn't any on the shelf, and the guys working there didn't know when they were going to get any more. I should have went to the customer service counter to get more info, but I was frustrated and left the store. The guy stocking the shelves mentioned something about a recall because of the oils in the ingredients.

It's not on the FDA recall page. I searched for Members Mark, Exceed, and Diamond and Doans (can't remember who makes it).

I believe that Doane makes, but it isn't Diamond.

Members Mark is the Company that makes many of Sam's Club's products.Members Marks makes Exceed, one of several dog foods at Sams. Nothing on the FDA recall list but it only goes to July 30/09

It seem to me that the question is does anyone know about a recall of Exceed and not a witch hunt to speculate about who makes it. I think since no one has posted they know a thing about it I doubt if we will learn anymore till someone can verify it has actually happened.

Just my take of the situation

Members Mark is put on a bunch of products at Sam's, from pot and pans to pet food. MM is just an in-house marketing brand.

The shelves at my Sam's are full of both kinds of Exceed.

I'm still feeding it, but I'm not as happy with it since they moved to the new maker. Dogs are doing OK, but it's not as palatable to them...which means that I have a harder time managing their intake.

Me neither, but it's still cheaper then a lot of other foods. I tried to feed my pup ProPlan All Life Stages Chicken and Rice and she couldn't stomach it for some reason(?) and the Nutro Naturals I've used in the past went up as well.

What did you change to?

From what I understand, it seems to be a local voluntary recall. Someone complained about the oil seeping through the bag (has the bag changed?) and Sam's pulled it off the shelf. They had it in the back room, but they refused to sell me any. :x There is another store about an hour away with tons of Exceed on the shelf, so I am making a short road trip this morning.

A lot of the animal feeds around here, including Exceed, are now sold in a plastic weave bag (no wax paper or plastic liner)......kind of like a cheap woven tarp. So I can see how that might leak, must've been pretty oily though. Thanks for the update.

I feed the Members Mark Exceed- Chick & Rice, Have not had any problem getting it . The bags have always been those plastic type. Have never noticed food being extra oily. My Crew does really well on it and I sure do like the less poo pick up.

Members Mark is the house brand at Sams Club, just like Kirkland is to Costco. The Exceed dog food is NOT made by Sams or Members Mark. Who ever the mill is that makes their dog food just puts the food in their brand name bags. Just like the pots and pans and everything else is all made by some one else with Members Mark's name on it.

Fellow on the Cover Dog Forum contacted Exceeds headquarters. He was told that the bags had been recalled by the distributor as a new bag has to be designed.

At first I was thinking new bag design meant, visually.....but after a moment's thought, I'm thinking it has to do with the oil seepage. Not long after this post started, I dumped a bag in my bin that had been sitting in the garage for maybe 3 weeks. Put my hand on the bottom to pick it up, and immediately noticed the outside bottom 1/4 or 1/5 of the bag was greasy. Wasn't terrible, just a little slippery film, and I couldn't see a spot on the concrete. Dog food didn't seem any different, and girls are chowing it down. Hope Sams has it back on the shelves in a week or two, before I run out! :o

Just as a point of reference, I live in Northern Utah and went into our local Sam's yesterday and there is no more Exceed on their floor here. I asked about it and was told they had pulled the Exceed and one other brand of dog food they had been carrying and didn't plan to carry it any longer. I don't think the person really knew for sure what the reason for pulling it or if it was coming back, but that is the response I received. I had fed Exceed for a long time and had good luck with it for the most part and then switched to another some time ago, partly because of the bumps in the road we saw a while back with the Exceed changing manufacturers, as I recall, and just a couple of months ago switched back, only to have this happen now. I don't know about you all but it's frustrating to get the dogs going good on a feed, only to have them change recipes, who produces it, etc and have to start all over again with another brand? It seems like the dogs just get use to it and the stools get good and then something changes. It would sure be nice to find a good food, at a decent price that had some continuity to it's existence that you could count on! It seems kind of radical to me to have it all pulled from the shelf just to design a new bag?

Great...I'm in Sandy UT and about out of food...will check our Sam's down here but imagine the story is the same. Has anyone seen it back on the selves yet?

**Supposedly they have 25 bags of it at the Draper UT store and know nothing about pulling it off the selves(?)

the story that they pulled the food because of a bag change sounds fishy to me..i have noticed other brands just put older formulas or older bags on sale to clear them out...the problem with those brands is that you have no access to information about anything and no recourse..what does that stuff cost anway? you can buy Canidae almost anywhere for less than a $1 lb and get the 6th bag free. if i fed kibble it would be hard not to feed it given the price and quality. you can call them anytime and get the nutritionist on the phone. they have on-line live support and even Twitter access.

Well...I jumped ship.

Between changing formulas and being out of stock on the Exceed, I stopped by a local feed store and picked up a small bag of Arkat VF Performance. Figure I'm only feeding one dog, the extra cost isn't going to break the bank. My pup normally just picked at the Exceed....but when I put down a bowl of Exceed mixed with the VF...she scarfed it down. Night and day difference. Last night and then again this morning...she never stopped till it was all gone.

I fed Exceed for years then switched to Purina because they support trials. Then Purina switched there formula and I went back to Exceed. Now I can't get Exceed so I'm back with Purina, but I am feeding the Purina One Lamb and Rice. The switch was easy for the dogs and stools stayed the same. I would recommend Purina One.

Purina One is appreciably more expensive than Exceed, but, at least here, most grocery stores carry it, so convenience is a consideration. Four of my dogs have been fed Purina One chicken and rice 28/16 in the off season, and all have done very well on it.

Rick

What do you feed during season?

Purina One is more expensive than exceed if you don't play the rebate games available. With Purnia's rebate, and the pet store rebates it is accually a little cheaper per pound than exceed. Plus as Rick stated you can find it any where.

Over the course of a number of years and dogs, we've tried 30/20s from Pro Plan, Eukanuba, Arkat, Diamond, PMI Exclusive, Maximum Nutrition (Walmart), Exceed and a feed store label, and have settled on Pro Plan Performance as the one they've done best on. So that's what they get any time they're working hard enough to burn their usual rations off. If circumstance is such that they start putting on weight, I feel better changing formulas than cutting their portions. And PP and PO are close enough we've never had adjustment issues.

The current Chessie managed to work hard enough this Summer to stay on PP:

If I'm not mistaken, isn't that the food that is sold in a camo bag?
If so, we have a local grocery store that just recently started carrying it but I know nothing nor have I heard anything about it? I would be curious which mill actually makes it and if it's any good? I think the same company markets those doggy power bars?

Anyone now anything more about it?

But you have to be aware once you start making additions then you are throwing the other ingredients out of balance such as all of the minerals and vitamins. I wouldn't advise spending the money for a well balanced feed and then throw it out by feeding a lot of scraps or other stuff so that the dog isn't getting enough of the trace ingredients to keep the dog healthy.

I refuse to accept the premise of the feed being well balanced. The balance in nutrition is a tertiary concern as opposed to the balance sheet in the accounting office.

If that was true then every dogfood company would be shut down and would be in court and end up spending millions in penalities as both the state and federal governments are checking the formulas, manufacturing, and advertising of each and every company. When it says complete it has to provide all of the nutrition that a dog needs to live in good health.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

None as we all found out when it was discovered by the very checks I just described. I never said something couldn't happen and we all know it can with a company or in our own homes. That is the reason there are so many requirements that are in place and so many checks to insure that products listed for sale must meet before you can get the licence to start production and they continue as long as you remain in business. Will there be things slip through, yes but the have almost always been caught before widespread damage has been done.

If so, we have a local grocery store that just recently started carrying it but I know nothing nor have I heard anything about it? I would be curious which mill actually makes it and if it's any good? I think the same company markets those doggy power bars?

Anyone now anything more about it?

Thanks
Yes I have seen it in the camo bag as well as the brown......never used it dont know anybody that has, but I've seen it...
