Post by vince » Thu Mar 26, 2009 10:56 am

Hi guys, im new here and have been looking through the threads and seem to see a trend with diamond foods. the thing is i have looked in a few pet stores here and no one carries it. I was wondering what people thought about nutro, either ultra or max. thanks

Welcome to GDF Vince.

Have you checked your local feed stores for Diamond? They're the ones that will carry it, not the big box stores. Also, there's probably a store locater on Diamond's website.

We've fed Nutro for about five years. Nutro Max Puppy, Nutro Nat. Choice High Energy, Nutro Nat. Choice Lg. Breed Wgt. Management- those are the ones we mainly feed. About half a year ago, for some of the dogs we've been mixing 50/50 Nutro Nat. Choice High Energy with Kirkland's Puppy formula (which is made by Diamond). If we run out of one we just feed the other- they seem to do fine on it like that. We really like the Nutro products, but we mix in the Kirkland because it is way cheaper cost-wise. When feed prices went up last year, we had to look around for other food. Earlier, we tried Diamond Naturals, and since then most of the line is now stocked at one of the feed stores so we might look into it again.

I feed diamond and started it because that was what my breeder feed. I really like the food and it is priced great. The stoles could be smaller but thats ok with me. If you look at the ingredients you will have to pay alot more to get the same at a big box store.

I started my dog on Nutro a when she was a pup but gave up on it when she was about a year. Nutro went through some tough times and sold their company to Mars. I felt that their prices immediately went up and their quality went down once they were bought by Mars. Also their ability to keep their product on the shelf has greatly declined and so if you choose Nutro make sure you are checking the dates on the bags as many vendors buy in huge amounts to keep the shelves full and the result is they sell outdated or near outdated products.

In my opinion you can find better food than Nutro for the same price.

I don't have a lot of experience with Diamond so can't comment on it.

Rather than Nutro I think CANIDAE is a far better food for the price. Higher calorie too.
http://www.canidae.com Ust their store locator too.

Here is the Diamond web site and click on Find A Dealer to find a store in your area.

Costco's Kirkland Chicken Rice made by Diamond is very much like the Diamond Naturals Chicken Rice for much less money too. Check it out at your local Costco Store.

Vince hopefully you have been given enough avenues to track down the Diamond brand you are looking for...sorry I could not help. I too was (still am) looking at various foods to replace a high priced performance food. It is funny how many of us say..."I am feeding XYZ because that is what the breeder fed" I have done that myself. I have come across Joy Dog food http://www.joypetfood.com/ To some of you that food is common, up north here, it is not! My question to those in the lower Midwest and south (where I understand it is more popular)...How does Joy rank with the others? I know of trainers/trialers feeding it and their dogs are performing at high levels. I am thinking of trying it out. I can get it at a local trainer's facility for an inexpensive price. http://www.joypetfood.com/highenergy.html

Agway is a farm supply co-op originally centered in New York but covers several states now. They have expanded into products and supplies for everyone as the years have passed. In the south there is a sister Co-op called Southern States and in the midwest there is Growmark Inc. All are farmer owned.

You should also find Diamond feeds at Tractor Supply stores, and they may have a better Diamond line up than Agway.

I wasn't impressed in the ingredients in Joy's food. Diamond would be far better no matter what you had to pay. Much better ingredinets when you really compare.

Tractor Supply has a great selection of Diamond foods....and the latest and greatest and most surprising place I've recently found Diamond.....Menards!!! Yep...now you can buy not only your lumber, plumbing, appliances, groceries, and paint.....but you can feed Fido from Menards too. :o
