Sty or bump under my Brittany's eye...

Post by KC » Fri Apr 08, 2005 12:50 pm

He's 5 months old and this bump on his lower eyelid just appeared out of the blue... I guess it is about the size of a BB just under the skin...
I've taken him to the vet and he's on antibiotic pills for two weeks and also a trple antibiotic salve to be put in his eye three times a day...

The eye itself looks normal, but the bump on the eyelid is hanging on there tough... It's been just over a week and there is no noticable improvement in it's "going away"....

Anyone else have any experience with this sort of thing? Suggestions? Nothing like a splinter or any foreign matter is visible.

My pup had one of those too, just showed up one day, lasted a few weeks then went away, don't sweat it.

THere is also something called Cherry eye, but your vet would have diagnosed it I`m sure if that was it.

I just thought I would update the condition of my brittany pup Jake.

It all started with what I thought was a stye on his lower eyelid. Well folks, it ended up being something much more of a problem..

The antibiotics and oitment did not help for two weeks.. The bump stayed pretty much the same thoughout that time. After the medication was gone, things got worse pretty fast.
The eylid really swelled up both on top and bottom. He also developed a bump about the size of a dime under his fur behind and above his eye as well as a large lump under his ear which turned out to be a lymph node. A different antibiotic and oitment were prescribed and still no improvement. The swelling continued and got worse to the point that the left eye was almost swollen shut and swelling started on the right eye as well along with lymph nodes swelling on both sides under his ears about the size of a golf ball.
At this time he was sent to a specialist where they immediately diagnosed the condition as "Puppy Strangles". The best way I can describe it is a disease of the immune system, where the immune system (in pups) goes hyper active and is the direct cause of all of the swelling. If left untreated it becomes faltal. It's very rare and the symptoms don't always look the same, which was the case with Jake as he was never "sick" in regards to his activity level.

He has been prescribed steroids to calm down the immune system and reduce swelling and it has worked very well. But this desease also is known to be very difficult to get rid of as flair ups are pretty common. Jake has had a few flair ups already, but with continued medication he should be back to normal in about a month.
All information I have been given indicates that once fully treated it will not return. The steroids have caused him to really gain weight, he weighs 50 pounds at almost 7 months of age...

About $750 cost so far, but glad things are going to be ok.
FYI.
