Does Lamb and Rice give a dog gas?

Post by splucinski » Mon Feb 18, 2008 8:33 pm

I have a 7 mo old GSP that I got about 1 week ago, I've been feeding her PMI Exclusive chicken and rice formula. She's hasn't shown a lot of interest in it but she will eventually eat. The other day I picked up a free sample of Diamond lamb & rice. I put both foods out tonight in separate bowls to see if she preferred one over the other. She actually ate from both bowls about equally. A little later she had some of the worst gas, dang near made my eyes water. Well she's never had gas before and I'm just wondering if this new food might be the culprit.

I have fed science diet lamb and rice and havent notice anything like that. I have also tried lamb with eukanuba and nothing also so it might be something else thats only in that brand.

I can't imagine that the sample bag of L/R would cause that much gas problem. Might be your dog has a very sensitive stomach. You have only had it for only a week. Could be stress maybe. If you change food do it slowly and give it some time to see what happens. Might try the green bag of Iams Chunk and see what happens with the gas. 1 large bag should tell you if it is going to work.

How much do you feed your new dog?
How are the dogs stools?

If the gas continues no matter what you feed I would look into using the supplement PROZYME. A digestive aide that will help the gas problem for sure. http://www.prozymeproducts.com

Having gas one time is not anything to worry about. Gas can be caused by many different things with a dog just like different things do with us.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

sometimes just changing up the food gets their system off balance enough to cause gas...however when i was feeding purina one my weim was borderline unbearable to be around :S

3 GSP's, 2 at 10 monthes, and 1 at a year and a half. they have eaten Diamond since we got the first one, and they have all gotten a varity of the Diamond, we usually mix it, at times they get pretty rank, and at times we can, actually, stand to be around them. I don't know the causes, but they are all healthy and happy, and they really enjoy their food so that is what they get. You may have to keep a can of air freshned around, though.

I feed the PMI active dog formula. Purple bag, any food can give gas. When my female lets one loose, time for her to go out. She comes in and no more foo foos :)

She can clear a room thats for sure :(

does it have any fish emulsion or fish oils buried somewhere in the ingredients? I have used nutro L&R natural choice on all my pet dogs since 1991 or so and none have ever had any unusual gas. I really like the coat of a dog on L&R and the low residual (having little or no corn) helps keep stool volume smaller. Back in the early 90's there were few premium foods. Now it seems there are many.
