Setter shaving
How short do you trim your Setters in the summer? The Pete is getting a trim in a week and I was wondering what length you guys trim to.

My dogs are outside & I never trim except the fethering & under arms if you trim to much they can sun burn . they need hair to preven sun burn the whiter they are it is worse for sun burn . I bought Lucky in Texas . when I brought her to Mo. my vet warned me to have plenty of shade because her hair was so thin . If you live where the sun is hot & bright be carefull
Re: Setter shaving
I leave feathering alone on front legs and the tail (except the bottom 2 inches) but everything else I run over with a 1/2 inch guard. I only do it twice a year (early and late summer). Keeps her a little cooler without exposing her to sunburn. Also, a little Cowboy Magic or Show Sheen in the feathering will help keep the burrs out. The price you pay for all those pretty flag points
Re: Setter shaving
I use a #10 blade all over, except for ears, flag, and front leg feathering, which get scissored to whatever looks good. First clip is in late April-early May before the sun gets hot, then again in August or early September.

#10 blade everywhere except the tail flag and a little behind the front legs. We train through the summer so they get clipped around 4x per year.

For you folks that have to shave your setters, did they have the long coat right away? Mine is almost 1.5 years old and has a fairly short coat, no shaving required...yet. just curious if it will fill in later? I'm hopeful it stays as is. Here's all 32lbs of her.

Mine filled in right away. I run against some setters that have very fine coats and rarely need to be shaved.

For those of you that use a #10 blade are you also using a guard or just the blade. I finished shaving my setter with an Oster A5 2 speed. it has a #10 blade, but I used a 1/4 inch guard.
