wobblers syndrome

Post by lking » Thu Jan 02, 2014 11:48 am

I have a young lab pup (5 months) that my local vet thinks may have something called wobblers syndrome. Basically he is good for a month and then shows a great deal of weakness in his hind legs and has difficulty moving about. We did a blood panel to detect for lyme's, etc...which came back negative. The good news is that 1 day on prednisone and he is bouncing again.

I have researched this syndrome and know what it is and why it happens, I'm just wondering if anyone has had specific first hand experience with it that can give me an idea of our future and what I as a responsible dog owner can do to help pup.

I've been told that the only true way to detect for this is an MRI which is extremely costly. Surgery can be done but for upwards and above 10 grand.

This is a congenital issue. "Most likely inherited in dogs". Must be a big disappointment for you. What is the breeder saying?

I would try a Great Dane forum this is quite common in their breed.
