My 13mth old GSPs front paw pad just started peeling. It started on the side of the main center pad and peeled off about 1/4 of the pad at about 1/8" thick. It looks like it could easily start back up. It doesn't seem to bother him, but I don't want it to get worse and possbily go deeper.
I've seen where Tincture of Benzoin has been mentioned as a good healing/toughning cream. Any suggestions on how to care for it right now? And then any preventative measures down the road.
His pads are well seasoned as he is a highly acive dog and gets a bunch of running in each day on multiple surfaces.
thanks
Jarad

Re: Peeling pads
This is a question for Dr. Tim Hunt who checks in here on a regular basis. You may wanna email him about this or just wait till he jumps on the forum. I am sure he has seen this problem with the sled dogs he cares for.

you can do nothing and it will heal, I use Cut Heal if needed.
Sounds like an exuberant pup type thing but if it continues might be the dogs gait.

The second kick from a mule is of very little educational value - from Wing and Shot.

Two things to do
1. Supplement with Zinc Gluconate (50 mg) three times a week
and
2. Road the dog more.
