Sam's Dog Food
Sam's Dog Food
I have seen other threads on this...... what is the brand and type you all like?

Re: Sam's Dog Food
are you asking about the food at Sam's or just what people like in general?
Re: Sam's Dog Food
I've fed the Chicken & Rice formula for a couple years now. I buy a couple bags at a time, and was a little disappointed when I went in last week, and saw the price had went up another $1. The dogs have done well on it though, so I'm not pushed to go and try something new quite yet. I haven't tried any of their other brands...
Re: Sam's Dog Food
i dont have a sams here but i cant beat the deal i get at petsmart...its 65 bucks a bag for a 35 pound bag of PPP here, which to me is too much so i print off a price match on the U.S site for petsmart and they will match it here so i pay 29.99 or a few bucks more depending on their price that day..i buy 4 bags at a time usually so its basically buy one bag get one free...ruth

Re: Sam's Dog Food
We used to feed the Exceed Chicken but the dog was up to 4 cups/day & loosing weight (plus putting out a lot of "excess"). So we switched to EVO Turkey & Chicken which is higher in protein. He needs less of it & it put muscle/weight on him within the first month.ddoyle wrote:I am just looking for the brand at Sam's I have read all the other dog food threads! I fed Diamond a few years back and could usually find it at the DeWitt Theisens, or any Theisens for that matter. It was always on the shelf. I don't know which formula you are using, but you might try there if you already haven't.ddoyle wrote:I am just looking for the brand at Sam's I have read all the other dog food threads! Re: Sam's Dog Food
I used to be a huge fan of Sam's Exceed. When they changed suppliers, though, it got hard to find, then there was a problem with the bags bleeding through early on. So, I ended up changing first to Native, then to Diamond Naturals...I feed the large breed puppy to both the adult dog and the young, crazy-energetic one with good results.
If the Exceed is readily available, cost effective and, most importantly, your dogs do well on it, it'd probably be great.

Re: Sam's Dog Food
Well, yes we do pay 13% sales tax here.. FREE healthcare in the sense of the word that NO MONEY is charged for any medical service provided nor are you billed at a later date, in other words you dont have to budget for medical expenses and you dont have to sell your home if you get cancer..you can take your family to the clinic or doctor, hospital as well as any and all specialists and receive total medical attention and/or surgery at no charge because you do pay the 13% sales tax..let me ask you, what do you pay in sales tax mcbosco?? say 6, 8 or 11% and would you not pay the extra percent on each dollar to ensure you and your family never ever have to worry about getting charged for blood work, a catscan, an MRI, surgery, deliver a child, mammograms, xrays, ultrasounds, EKG, EEG, heart stress tests, and the list goes on of services provided..and this is a right to any and all people not just if your working or not and not just if youre lucky enough to get a job that provideds it..poor or rich you get the same medical care as the next just like you get the same police, fire dept and ambulance..i could tell you without a doubt that i wouldnt lower my taxes to say 8% and give it all up, with 5 kids i can guarantee you ive used more then ive paid into for medical expenses for my family..and i could also tell you most of my family lives in the U.S and some havent seen a doctor for a long time because they cant afford to go, my sister cant afford blood work at 65 bucks every other month for her thyroid testing yet my daughter has never had to pay for hers with having the same condition, thats frustrating to me..my sister would love to be able to simply get blood work and should be able to but the airport she works at doesnt cover her and her hole 6 bucks an hour dont allow her to save for it...so ya things cost more here and i try to get the best deals i can when i shop, of course trying to keep as much money in my wallet as possible but some things are simply priceless and to me and my family health care is one of those things..also you dont think its the canadian government that determines the prices of things here do you?? its the manufacturer that charges the amounts here to make the extra money off of canadians, the government only gets the 13% tax which even on a hundred buck is only 13 dollars so if the manufactures didnt gouge us and would charge less here we would pay less..one doesnt have much to do with the other really but i will bite on your comment, but then you knew that right take care, ruth

Re: Sam's Dog Food
Why do you feel the manufactures are gouging you? Might it be that if it is made in Canada they have to pay more taxes and if it is made in the states or any other country then they have the import fees that Canada charges them?
I would love to have free health care but there is no such thing. And when anything is free people abuse it and go when they don't need to and then the people who do need it can't get it without standing in line in much of the country so they end up coming here to get the care they need NOW.
I just have trouble thinking everyone should have to pay for my care. And we all know when you start offering free and the government will pay for it you know that can not be as efficient since they have to pay for all of the people who handle the money. Sounds great but we all see the results. Nope, not my cup of tea.

Over the past year Canadians have complained (and rightly so) that goods were STILL more expensive in Canada despite the fact that the Canadian dollar was worth MORE than its American counterpart.
There is no explanation for that except price gouging. Which the mfg's do all by themselves with no help from anyone else, TYVM.

Gee thought I maybe had some idea what goes on since we have to import a lot of stuff into Ontario over the years we have been in business there. But I had no idea that someone in Flordia had the complete accurate knowledge of what the manufactures have been doing to Canada over the years. I admit I have no knowledge what others are doing but I do know all of the products we imported and exported back and forth were fairly priced but the cost of crossing the border was a problem. But then I learn something new everyday.

Re: Sam's Dog Food
ezzy the reason why someone may go stateside to get medical attention as you said "NOW" may be because out of lets say a million people only a hundred thousand can afford to go to the doctor and thats why you dont have any wait periods, most people are just suffering or living with their illnesses as opposed to going to the doctor, where as EVERYONE here is entitled to see a doctor and not only see one for treatment but for prevention as well, so you are definitely going to have to wait for appts but not an unrealistic wait time and life threatening issues are always dealt with quickly from my experiences especially with my mom and all the cancers shes had..Why do i feel manufactures are gouging? because they are, they can get 65 bucks a bag for dog food here so they do, they cant it somewhere else therefore they dont charge that much for it, you mean to tell me youve never noticed pricing differences on the same product depending on the area?? by the way who do you think pays for the healthcare over there when people ditch their bill?? if someone gets medical attention and dont pay the money comes from somewhere and its very common practice to ditch a bill there..the thing here is we ALL pay the taxes and we ALL get the care, nobody carries the weight of someone elses medical bills, whether you are rich or poor, have a mansion and a great job or live in low income housing and are unemployed you are entitled to the same doctor, the same tests, the same prevention and the same treatments which is how it should be..if your house is on fire, do you think the fire dept should look and see how much money you have and what job you are in before putting out the fire or saving your life?? makes no sense to do that with healthcare either.. i have lived here 35 years and i do have many relatives in the U.S so i can only speak from actual experiences and i will say that with owning our own construction company and having 5 kids we would be bankrupt if we would have decided to move to the U.S to be with family cause with the medical issues myself and 2 of my kids have had we would have lost our business, lost or had to mortgage our home and my kids surely wouldnt be in college right now (3 of them) because i would be dirt poor and sick without the healthcare my family and i are blessed enough to have, that is a fact and certainly is my cup of tea...ruth

So what is the protein and fat levels in the new chicken and rice formula at Sam's Club?
Re: Sam's Dog Food
The new Exceed is 30/16 and about 65 cents lb in NJ. Someone told me BJ's has a good one.
Re: Sam's Dog Food
Just seems to me there have been too many "issues" with dog food coming from Sam's in the past. Based on previous discussions on the board, thats a feed that will never make it into the feed bowls in our house. jmo...

Well, perhaps the fact that I was born & raised in Ontario might have something to do with it. Oh yeah, and the 8 years I spent in Atlanta with an international company that had manufacturing & distributing in Canada, the US, England, Ireland, Sweden, Italy, Germany....ezzy333 wrote:SubMariner wrote:Exactly.GUNDOGS wrote:also you dont think its the canadian government that determines the prices of things here do you?? its the manufacturer that charges the amounts here to make the extra money off of canadians, the government only gets the 13% tax which even on a hundred buck is only 13 dollars so if the manufactures didnt gouge us and would charge less here we would pay less..one doesnt have much to do with the other really but i will bite on your comment, but then you knew that right take care, ruth

NAFTA may also have slipped your mind: no tariffs or duties on things manufactured in the US, Canada, or Mexico. Crossing the border really isn't an issue, especially when you consider that Canada is America's largest trading partner. And FOB Toronto really isn't much different than FOB Buffalo as there are multiple shipping options by rail and even truck that keep transportation costs fairly reasonable.
The Canadian dollar has been strong enough over the past year for US manufacturers to stop using the "weak Loonie" as an excuse for higher prices. But Canadians are still paying way over what Americans are for the same goods, despite this fact. It really needs to be addressed.

Won't feed box store food to the dog... fed Innova EVO with great results. After my dog went on her trip to the nationals she has been switched to diamond extreme athlete. No problems but once or twice a week she has been known to clear the room. Will probably mix the two and see what I get....

Re: Sam's Dog Food
Inspired by this thread I switched my GSP to Exceed 30% chicken/rice about a week ago. He was on Nutro high energy.
Observations:
-Fair amount cheaper. Exceed was ~$30 for 44 lbs while the Nutro was around $45 for 35 lbs.
-My GSP was obsessed with getting at the Exceed food. He was way more interested in it than his other stuff. I'm guessing it smells better to him.
-The larger bag doesn't fit in my dog safe food container with the spin on lid. So I've storing the rest of the bag in the garage away from the dog's access.
-Bites are bigger pieces. I wish they were a little smaller so they won't be so rough on his tummy. He tends to burp more and eat a little faster.
-The bites are a little more greasy looking. If you touch them you can feel the grease on your skin. It doesn't wash off easily. The Nutro was really clean and dry.
-Gas production is up and more acidic. On Nutro when he passes gas you smell it but its nothing terrible. On the Exceed it kind of burns your noise and seems more acid. He also seems to do it more often.
-More food craving. I'm not sure why but it seems like he wants to eat a lot more often now that he's on Exceed. I've even been added green beans to the feed to try and keep him full. It may be moving to fast through his system. (would explain the gas)
-Droppings are consistent, a little more greasy looking than before. I'm guessing he's more lubricated now.
So for what its worth. That's my findings so far.

Re: Sam's Dog Food
I have one very fast eater too. She use to be free fed, but as she got older and put on a little weight, I had to start rationing and that seemed to make her greedy. Could be the new food, taste, etc that has your dog gobbling it down. If mine gets to eating too fast, my vet recommended feeding in a muffin pan, and that works great. If you have a fast eater, you'll have burping.
Amazingly my dogs don't have much for gas issues. They still let one rip from time to time, but it's rare that we notice.
FWIW I feed 2.5 cups a day per dog, split into 2 feedings. One shorthair is 52 lbs and the older one is 62 lbs. That seems to work for both of them, but I'll fluctuate a little if I see a weight difference I don't like. I would think a person would have to do that with any food brand. If they are hunting hard, like during the trip we took, I was giving them 4+ cups per day. I did that for about a week after we got home, and then tapered them back down to their normal ration.
Both dogs have nice looking coats, and the younger one also shows in conformation. Both are fit field dogs that have no problem logging 25 miles in a full day of hunting.
I am going to have to go with Greg's quote. You can get positive and negative reactions from folks, no matter what food you feed, so that's got to be the bottom line regardless of the brand.

If the Exceed is readily available, cost effective and, most importantly, your dogs do well on it, it'd probably be great.

Still no one has owned up, I'm sure the person who took it down could make a case that they had legit reasons to remove it ie "off topic or whatever", but you'd think they'd at least claim it. Now it's just funny.

Some forums they just pull it.Redfishkilla wrote:So somebody can remove a post without any explanation to the poster? The person who removed it must feel it's a questionable decision because they won’t claim it. Real classy.
General courtesy is to PM the poster an explanation.

I like a good fart joke .... just not the fart. So it looks like ill be switching foods or using the diamond as a filler and mix the two... see if that filters it and makes it smell better. Nothing like ruining a good movie because you skimped on the price of dog food.

Way I figure, if you never ruffle any feathers you never really say anything.ultracarry wrote:Thought about it.

Some places just let you say more. (Don't start the slander lawsuit nonsense.)
