I've got Catherine registered for the Brittany Club field trial next Saturday, and this evening I noticed her vulva is very swollen, and she's just starting to spot. Is this going to put us out of contention for next week, or should she be through the critical part by then? This is her first heat cycle, so I'm a little green on the process.
Also, how aggressive should I expect the neighborhood males to be? We've got a 6' cedar fence all around our back yard, and she's in a dog run with a 4' fence. Is there anything else I can do to keep her safe, short of keeping her in the house?
Thanks!

Re: Perfect timing?
Okay, after doing some more reading, it appears Cat is, in fact, not going to be able to compete next week. Bummer.
I'll shoot for running her in the November hunt test instead.

She should be okay with the cedar fence but I have heard of dogs doing crazy things to get to a dog in heat. How big is your kennel? You might try putting some kind of top on the kennel. I wasnt sure when my GSP was going to go into heat and was getting a little worried it might interfere with her trialing but fortunately she is pretty much done at this point with the trial being 2 weeks away.

Re: Perfect timing?
She's actually in an L-shaped dog run that's about about 6' x 15' in both directions. It's at the corner of the house, so two of the "walls" are actually the exterior walls of the house, two more sides are the 6' cedar fencing, and then the yard side has the 4' fence. Putting a top on it isn't really an option. Hopefully the cedar fence will be enough to keep neighbor dogs out of our yard altogether. I do put her in the garage in her travel kennel at night.
