Tested both lowest and highest settings on myself before putting it on my dog. Not fair to submit her to a shock if I don't know exactly what that button is doing.

I wouldn't put any electric collar on a dog that I didn't first test on myself.
Not just at the model level, but each specific unit.

I did when I first started using a collar but not any more. Using it on yourself doesn't tell a thing about what the dog is feeling. Just put it on the dog, start at the lowest setting and adjust until you get the very slightest reaction from the dog and go from there as needed. I have learned that testing it on myself serves no purpose other than saying I did.

Imagine this, Sport Dog 1875 1/2gal Jim Beam, 2 cases of beer, 4 burly guys at camp and no satellite trying to act tough. We made it to 8 but we were heavily intoxicated. I would never go past 4 with my dog.

Yah I used my sport dog 400 on my throat up to level 4 and my friend went to 5 but I only go up to 4 on my lab if its necessary. We had a bunch of people over a few weeks ago and I would turn it to 8 and get them in the leg or arm. But of course that was after we had started on the beer and whiskey

It was pretty funny, it wouldn't have happened if there had been more than one girl there

I didn't read all the posts so pardon if I'm repeating this. But, if you are just holding your thumb across the connectors then it's not much of a test because your finger and thumb skin is callused. I test by holding it against the inside of my wrist, much more sensitive there.

I always check mine before putting them on. I use the Tritronix Upland.

HOWEVER, testosterone is a dangerous thing! My younger brother has always been a little adventurous and was showing off for his kids. He said to put it on HIGH and I said you sure 1x, 2x, then 3x -- then I let him have it (on his arm). I'M THE ONE THAT GOT HURT when I fell on the floor laughing so hard.

Then my idiot ex-son-in-law: he and his buddy were trying to show each other up so they put the collars on their necks! We went from 1/2 to 5 on each level -- both momentary and continuous. Such idiots in parts of our military that it scares me. The electrodes left a pretty good mark.
