Upgrade from CZ Ringneck?
Upgrade from CZ Ringneck?
I've got a cz Ringneck, 28ga/26" and I love how it carries, I love how it looks, but I can't hit birds with it!
Its so light that I keep stopping my swing. So, I'm wondering what sxs guns would be a step up in quality for under $1500 or so.
So, can you guys list what side by side guns I should be looking at? I"m sort of new to this part of the shooting sports and don't know what is out there.
(or, I might try another Ringneck, but in 20ga/28")????

Stevens 311
I'd go with a Stevens 311 Model E. I just sold my 311A for this one to have a longer barrell but both are built solid for the money. They are not too light or too heavy. I would go with the model E because of the checkering on the stock adds character. You can get them in 28" or 30".
If you do look at them be sure not to get the tenite stock. It looks good in pictures but it is a hollow plastic that will kick the crap out of you when you shoot it.

I would first find someone that can tell you what you are doing wrong and they can help you out, like an instructor at a trap or clays range. It might be something as simple as changing the stock a little, or adding weight like was already suggested.
As far as guns go if you want to switch maybe try to find a Browning BSS, out of production now but can be found with a little looking. I recently shot one and was really impressed with it and they can usually go for around the price range you talked about. If you like your Ringneck go to a gun smith and get properly fitted and then go to DeHaan shotguns. I think they are the same gun just slicked up a bit with better triggers plus you can get a stock to your specs and barrel length whatever you want, good luck. The SGr CS, SxS comes in at $1600, but it's pretty much a custom gun built for you. Good luck!

Hasty-
I have the BSS on my list; need to find one at a gun show to see how it feels. I was just on the Browning website looking for it, I can't believe they discontinued it??!!
I also want to check out a D'Italia....any opinions on it?
My club just got a "field clays" course going last fall; when they get going in the spring I'll take the Ringneck and see just how bad/good I can really do with it. The guy running the program is a good wingshot, so I look foreward to picking his brain.
In looking back at the season, the grouse just didn't give me much to shoot at this fall! Sort of makes me wonder if there is any real difference between an $800 gun or an $8,000 gun when the birds just don't co-operate.
thanks for the help!

I've handled a couple of the Weatherby SxS's and the are handsome but I haven't shot one, which is really the only way that I can say if I liked it or not. The fit and finish was pretty good but was different with both the guns though, one was really nice the other's screws weren't indexed correctly and for that much money it better be right.
As for finding a gun for sale on the net that's out of production I would go to www.gunsamerica.com A gun show may have one but it's all luck in finding one. I rarely see them around here. Plus when the show is over will the seller back up his sale if their is a problem with the gun as soon as you get it home.
In the $800 vs. $8000 side of the coin my view is to use what works. For me it's a Browning BPS upland special in 20g. I hit better with that gun than anything I've ever shot regardless of price. If I'm going out of state to hunt and don't want to have second thoughts about if I brought the right shotgun, it's the one I bring. It's neat to have a really tricked out shotgun to show off but when it come to the hunt, the dogs and the birds don't care how fancy anything is. As long as the gun is reliable, fits you, and you can shoot it well is more important the what brand it is or how many hours went into making it.

Of course there is the 8,000 dollar gun is prettier to look at after the birds didn't cooperate.VtBlackDog wrote:Hasty-

I've heard a lot of good things about the Browning BSS but I just don't like the huge forestocks on them (I'm more of a splinter guy). There is one at my local gun shop for around 1400 I think.

I came close to getting a Franchi Renaissance in 20ga before I bought my 16 ga:

I think it was around your price range, and came with a hard case too.

Think he wants a side by...but if an O/u is an option, I would have recommended the renaissance.
I'm a fan of short/light guns from all my years chasing forest grouse but I don't shoot them as well on open country critters. Any lighter double I think I'd want 28" barrels.
The used browning BSS price has risen beyond reason lately, in my opinion, for what you get.
The CZ guns are really a pretty good buy. If you like them, you might want to check out the DeHaan's--which are imported CZ's redone here in the states. I believe they are discontinuing some models now, deals might be there if you jump on them.

The shorter barrels are for getting on the target quicker
the longer barrels are for better follow through
