I've always shot pumps and semi auto's. I'm thinking about getting an o/u. It would be used in the field and a little at the trap and skeet club. I see a couple of the lower priced o/u's can start misfiring on second shot which wouldn't be thrilling. Any ideas on a new or used gun that would be in my price range.

The wife wants a new pistol so that must mean I get a new shotgun.

Loved the Ruger Red Label I once had but soon came to the realization that the barrels were turned the wrong way

So does that mean you didn't shoot it well or was the wife mad and holding it?

The B-guns are reliable guns. you should be able to find a good used one in that price range. Gauges sub to the 12ga. might cost a little more.

Love my Red Label....... Don't know if I'd buy the newest version, think it was only produced for a year or two. Can't go wrong with a B gun either +2.

Mad wife..pffft, I'm always in trouble w/that girl for something or another so, whatever - I do what I want..I just tell the dog that mean 'ol mom was threatening to take him to the pound again & go about my business..I'm not worried about her...

Actually, I shot the Red Label very well but it slapped my cheek terribly..I wasn't so smitten with the gun that I was compelled to bend the stock for better fit so off it went. Nike is probably right about the most recent RL's as it seems as though QC took a bit of a nose dive in later yrs..never had a lick of trouble out of mine & I shot it alot - it was circa' late 90's manufacture I think.

So far as barrels turned the wrong way..

What kind of birds do you hunt? How much you carry vs. shoot? Unless you're a hardcore waterfowler, I wouldn't automatically assume 12g. is what you want. See if you can friend with a Citori 16g. and shoot it. Screw in chokes give it flexibility for any task short of goose hunting.

I hunt upland mostly very little waterfowl. My good friend has shot a 16 for 50 years. The problem being I've shot a 12 for 50 years. All my family shoots a 12. Just don't see myself changing. When the family goes out and throws a few clays we are always swapping guns and shells. Just works for me.
I picked up a used citori down at cabelas a couple days ago. It had 26 in barrels. Seemed a little short but felt good. Picked up a Beretta 682 Gold E might have had 32 in barrels. Felt like it swung alright. But was a little higher priced than I wanted to go. Still looking
The citori had more wear than I wanted and the wife didn't like all the wear. The Baretta was really nice but a little on the high side.

How do you carry that heavy antique? Way to many over and unders that are tons better than that are far better and 2 to 3 pounds lighter my gosh terrible suggestion

I have a Winchester 101 that I like a lot. I had a Citori but it just didn't fit me very well. When I mount a gun, I want it to naturally come up to the right place. Depends on the balance, length of pull and weight. You can have one fitted but that's pretty expensive, so I look for one that easily comes to my shoulder with my cheek in the proper place on the stock and the sight lined up with little effort. Since you will be upland hunting find the one that seems to mount the easiest and buy that one. Just my two cents.

C'mon TP..don't hold back..tell us how you really feel.

A lot of folks have the same sentiment as you.I think primarily due to the QC problems they became known for..I liked mine.

Would be interested in hearing what you like.

I have a Silver Pigeon that shoots very well for me and you should be able to find a used one in your price range. i had a Citori but i did not like the way it shot for me. maybe it was just the 12g for the citori, but the Beretta is a 20g and very nice to carry all day. i have handled the Franchi Instinct and that is pleasure as well. you can find a new one in your price range.

I shoot a Red Label that has never let me down. Only complaint is the less-than-stellar wood.

Cant go wrong with any of the new berettas like a pigeon I like the new 828 in a benelli I own that one, I also like the franchi the SL model in a 20 just for hunting quail with a 26 inch barrel , I just don't like old and heavy !!!!

It's a 101 sportsman 30 inch with 5 EXTENDED SIGNATURE INVECTOR-PLUS™ CHOKE TUBES. It is on the used rack but it is a new gun that is discontinued they say. Been at the store a year or two in the back room. On the winchester sight it shows them for $2350. This one is on clearance for $1349. When I mount it I'm looking straight down the barrel. After someone mentioned fit I read a little about shotgun fitting and it appears this is not to bad for what little i know about it.

If it's want you want go for it, it should outlive your children. However if you like the Beretta' s, I'd hold out for a gently used one.

What price did you find on a Citori?

If you are recoil-sensitive, be aware that this gun has a reputation of socking you pretty hard. Also is 30" (plus extended chokes) what you want for quail or (if that's where you hunt) woods birds? All of which is not to say you shouldn't buy it, but be aware of possible negatives.

Pull one up to your shoulder and you will love it , its just my back up gun in ks pheasant hunting , if you pull up nw ks phez short cover in the hunting section you will see what I smoke them with I bought a pointer over and under this weekend at cabelas a 20 guage in a 28 inch barrel just for throwing around in truck dog training and for my girlfriend to use we shot 100 rounds through it at some clays and it was nice for a cheap "bleep" gun I paid under 500 with tax for it , I like it for a beater

Citori 600 to 800 for old well used 1100 to 1200 for a little better shape but older
Beretta and Benelli 1600 to 2800.

Ya I've heard the older winchester have a fair amount of recoil but I've heard the back bored barrels, the new design, the vented barrels, better recoil pads, and this gun being a little over seven pounds. I think they won't hurt you quite as bad as the older guns.

Guess I've always shot a 30 in. Gun. I've got a couple 26 and 28 in. One being an 1100 rem that my daughter really likes. I pick up a 26 inch o/u that weighs in at 6lbs and it just doesn't feel normal. Although this gun is long. Probably 5 inches longer than a 26 inch citori

Ouch, we see better prices on used Beretta's than that. A Beretta 686 runs around $1800 new. Not a fan of the ported barrels, little effect on recoil, a pain to clean, and my eardrums have had enough damage.

No mention of Miroku? Come on guys! Look for a good used Miroku in the $1200-$1500 range. Since Miroku built many of the Brownings, if you like Browning, you will probably like a Miroku.

Here ya go, half the price and all the gun. Only problem is it's a 12. You really do need to look into a 16 or 20. I haven't carried a 12 in the field in over 10 years and I most likely never will again.

The Japanese made SKB's, the vast majority are Japanese made, are really outstanding guns and relatively cheap used. Beretta White Onyx are also superb.

Someone contacted me due to an earlier post within this thread.

They asked about stock bending and could I help..if my comments implied that I do this, I do not.
(although I have considered setting up to do just that)

My previous comment should have been stated a bit more clearly by saying "having the stock bent for me".

Brand isn't really that important. If the gun is a poor fit you wont be able to shoot it worth a "bleep". Run down to the store, hold a bunch of them, try your buddies guns, go to a range. Don't buy a gun based on internet reviews and ratings. Certainly you should take them into consideration as it pertains to reliability, but as far as how they shoot what one person has to say doesn't mean a "bleep" thing. The gun has to fit you well or you're just buying wood and metal.

Had my 60th birthday tonight. The wife and kids surprised me with a browning citori white lightning.

I like that gun in 16 GUAGE A little,heavy for my taste but for a birthday present I would knocked them down to get it

They had it before I started this post.
One of the grandson's seemed to like it

Took it out and shot some clays. Shot it really well. However both my boys won both the shooting games. They were both shooting really well.

Be aware that if a little dirt gets in the lock area the gun will not fire. The safety does not sense that the action is closed. After about 4 failures to fire on one extremely good season, i took crocus cloth to the action to give it room for some sage brush dust. Love the gun but still use an old loose 5 1/2 lb Velmet 16 for dog training and hunting in lava where i may fall down. Can''t scratch that new gun.

So do you have to pull the butt stock off to get to that area. Seems to be a common problem with several of the OUs

Wedding anniversary was a week latter. Got the wife a S&W m&p ported shield with the high vis sights and the enhanced trigger. Sweet little gun.

When we were first talking about a new shotgun she said she wanted a new conceal carry. That turned into a spendy shotgun, but a happy wife makes for a happy marriage. (Pretty sure when she said she wanted a new pistol she already had the shotgun)
