Semi Auto Rifle

Post by stonegripper » Sat Dec 30, 2006 5:44 am

Got a question for all you deer hunters...

I bought some land in Missouri which allows me to hunt deer with a high power rifle. .270 and30.06 are favorite calibers.

I have some older bolt rifles in several calibers, but this gives me an excuse to buy a new rifle (auto).

I'd like recommendations based on use/performance of high powers in any caliber suitable for deer that are automatic.

Browning, Benelli etc. come to mind.

Thanks

Have never used or owned a hi-power auto so I can't help you with that.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Used to mount scopes and sight them in for people.

In all the rifles I worked with, I only saw the Remington and Browning semi-autos. The Browning consistently shot rings around the Remington.

From what I have seen in the past the Browning is the better choice. I have never owned an autoloader myself but my uncle has owned the Remington and now owns 3 Brownings. 1 in 270, 1 in 30-06, and 1 in 300 Win Mag. His Remington was a 30-06. He had problems with the Remington and has not had any problems with the Brownings. Plus they are more accurate from what I've seen. I also have a friend that shoots a Browning in 7mm Rem Mag and he loves his also.

No personal experience but thought I would share what I have witnessed with friends and relatives.

What part of Missouri will you be hunting? I hunted in the Ozark region of SE MO for several years and always carried a Remington auto .270 Win. If you will be hunting in the Ozarks, your shots will generally be close and therefore accuracy won't be an issue. The main thing I like about that rifle is that it has the feel of a shotgun, something that I am a lot more familiar with.

Interesting question and sorry I'm late!

I hunt the NY catskills and have for almost 40 years.

I love my Winchester Model 100 Semi in 308.

Friends and family all use Semi autos but few can match the 243/308 short actions when semi autos are the flavor.

I also prefer this caliber for deer in the 150 -200 pound range as the 150 grain silver tips tend to make the kill with the least amount of additional damage to adjoining areas. Thats just a personal preference I have in the heavy cover we hunt and I suspect I would like a flatter shooter where shots over 100 yards were common. 95% of my deer came at less then 25 yard shots and only one in 38 years was farther then 100 yards. None walked away.
