Ithaca Hammerless..... whats it worth? Is it worth it?

Post by jimbo&rooster » Thu Nov 08, 2012 7:01 am

I was trolling through the used rack at a local gun shop, and they had an old Ithaca Hammerless on the shelf. It was in good shape, no cracks in the wood, no wear to speak of. The gun is a 20ga.

Any one have any experience with this gun? Whats it worth?

Jim
A limit on the strap is nice, but the kill has nothing to do with tradition.

No pics but I called and the serial number is 363850. I would call it 85-90%

Not much info.
I suppose you mean a Flues?...very late teens to mid 1920s?
No cracks or wear and a 20 would raise my suspicions if resting on a used gun rack.
W/o a grade, chambers, barrel specs, vetting by an Ithaca-versed smith, restock, etc.....kinda difficult to evaluate first and price, second.
Probably $50-$1500(maybe), higher if lightning struck.
Hard to say.

Mountaineer is right...too hard to give you a good appraisal without pics and often more.

It's a Flues listed as a 1922 gun on the doublegunshop forum mfr dates. If it's a field grade gun in all original condition at 85-90%, it could be worth maybe $2k or even more to a collector. High condition vintage field grade guns are rare because they were cheap utilitarian guns and everyone used the ones they bought as opposed to high grade guns that are less likely to have seen heavy service. If it's a refinished gun, it could be worth $1500 to nearly zero depending on a lot of things. If Doug Turnbull did the restoration, it would be closer to the $1500 (of course it could have cost $3k to restore it at Turnbull's). If joe the amatuer gunsmith did it, it could be worth zero if he messed up things like wallthickness of the barrels.
