Drilling

Post by Dirtysailor » Wed May 04, 2011 7:30 am

Anybody here using drillings for hunting? I have been kicking around the idea of a utilitarian type gun, probably sxs 16G over 8mm. Seems to be alot of them, the weight seems good to not be to light to swing correctly but the barrels are shorter, easier to manuver in my part of the grouse woods. You can even make inserts to allow use of rimfire for them. Just wanted to hear some actual field reports from folks on them if they are out there.

Sounds to me like someone wants to bird and deer hunt at the same time? :D

Not legal here so no, but I would like to have less to clean and maintain.

I know someone that accomplishes that by carrying a beater shotgun that they don't mind dropping in a hurry and a rifle with the sling.

If it's not legal, they could still get you with the centerfire under barrel.
I have English Pointers because they don't ever grow up either...

i looked at german made drilling, in a pawn shop a few years ago. the gun was surprizingly light and well ballanced (16Ga. over 8MM). Seemed to be hand made and had beautiful ingraving and wood. I wish i would have bought it since i primarly hunt with 16 gauge. I passed because i did not know 8mm was such a versitle cartridge. I do not believe i would pass the gun up if i got do overs.
