Also, I was not aware that there was a FC steel and one for lead. There is always something to be learned on this forum. :)

I use a 20g Stoeger over under. Bare bones, not fancy, I dig it.
Gotta get it cut down because it's a little long and sometimes I have trouble getting it up quick enough!

I guess choice of gauge first. Determined by game to be hunted.
For me I have to say next step how the gun feels when you throw it up & does it fits me.
Here where I hunt it's a lot of swamps and hillsides so lighter is better.... for me. ( Plus I am an ole timer) :D
I must say that I wonder if the first shotgun we buy is usually a mistake anyway and ends up in the back of the gun safe as we get older. My first shotgun bought some 32 yrs ago was a Remington 870 wingmaster 12 gauge which I turned into a slug gun for deer. I now hunt with a Franchi model 48 AL 28 gauge and I absolutely love it !


I am not putting down the 870 but rather making a point of how we change with time . :D
