Looking at a Stevens 20 gauge 311 for grouse, quail and pheasant. Would like to add a sxs to the cabinet and wondered if this would be a good gun to carry. It felt good shouldered has improved - modified and is in real good shape. They are asking $450 which seems kind of high since you can pick up a new cz bobwhite for a couple hundred more but like the older stuff.

I have one and like it. I would look on gunbroker though as you should be able to find one cheaper than that. It would have to be in 100% condition for that price and if its going to be a field gun a few scratches won't hurt.

They are good dependable guns, but I wouldn't pay that much.

I checked online at some of those and most were in the 3-400 range. Add shipping and transfer fees and not being able to see it in person makes the decision hard. Pay extra and know what you have or save 50-75 bucks? I might just keep checking around. Gun show this weekend and dealer claims it will be sold for more there.

Around 50 years ago my dad drove me to the local hardware store and let me pick out a 12 gauge for my birthday. I got a Stevens 311 and I still have it. I think I remember it costing $39.00. The gun has never missed a lick and never needed repairs. They are heavy and chunky to carry but are solid and dependable.

Mine has 28" bbls mod/full. The full choke bbl shoots the tightest pattern of any gun I have ever seen. I won a lot of turkey shoots with it as a kid until people caught on. :)

Take your time and search for a deal. Remember that in late spring and early summer odds are you can find better deals than during hunting season. I found one for $350 after shipping and transfer. Has a few scratches but nothing too bad and I didn't buy it to hang up on the wall and look at. When you take your time you can find deals on gunbroker.

I shoot a 311 in 20 and love the thing. If I have any complaints it would be that it seems to be choked a bit tight for grouse but is perfect for covey birds like chukar and huns and flat land grouse.

$450 seems pretty high. I was thinking of adding another in 12 or 16 and have seen several for under 350 in the last few months.
