I dont really know anything about guns but I want to use my remington 11-87 20 ga. to hunt with but the problem is that the gun will hold eight shells and that is illegal. what do i need so it will only hold three? thanks.

go look in the box it came in. you are looking for a long green plastic rod. it is called a plug. unscrew the magazine cap, remove the barrel and stock (after making sure gun is unloaded, of course). look at the end of the magazine. there should be a circular cap wedged in there. take a large, flat bladed screw driver and carefully pry the cap out, starting at one spot and going around the edge. hold your hand over it as you do this, because it is holding the magazine spring inside the magazine tube, and when you finally pry the ring out, the spring and ring are going to want to go flying. insert the plug in the magazine tube, reinstall the spring and ring, and put the gun back together. voila, you are legal.

if you do not still have the plug, go to a gun shop or even a sporting goods store like a cabela's and buy one. they are inexpensive and common for the Remingtons.

Should hold 5, not 8 unless it has an extension on the tube. You can make a decent plug out of wooden dowel that should slip through the hole in the spring clip without removal which is nice. Get a dowel as large as possible that will still fit through. Start too long and trim it till it allows the number of shells required. Two in the tube for three round restrictions. Paint it bright orange when you are done so when you remove it in the field someday and drop it, you can find it in the grass.

Lucky for you there is an authorized Remington Service dealer in Pinkneyville, IL, Not too far from where you live.
He is the sharpest gunsmith around this area, It's called Mann's Sporting Goods.

you can also make a plug by cutting the bottom part of a thick plastic coat hanger to fit. Start long and trim it down until only 2 shells will fit in the mag. The game warden counts the one in the chamber, so that plus two is three. If the magazine holds three, it won't be legal for migratory birds.

If you search google, I seem to remember a site that had an illustrated take down procedure for the 11-87, which should apply to you gun as well.

Here is a link to a blown up 1148. You can also order the plug in question straight from them. It is Gun Parts Corporation. If it's ever been built (Guns), they probably have the parts for it and this is most likely where your smith will order it from as well. Hope this helps you out.

It's just a length of rod of any kind. Once, in a pinch, I used a pencil cut to the correct length.

Best,

If it's a Remington product he either has, can get, or will find parts to fit it.

The empty cylinder of a Bic Round Stick Pen will work just fine. Amazing what you learn when the game warden pulls up

I've had a pencil in mine for several years now. Best dime I ever spent.
