Advice/Input

Post by Bird Dog 67 » Thu Mar 26, 2009 9:26 am

Hi All,

I'm looking at buying a .40 cal semi auto handgun for home and range. Right now I'm going back and forth between a Glock (if one can be found these days) and a Sig............any input as to which would be a good go to gun? If there are opinions on other brands as well I'd appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Birddog,
I like the Sigs over the Glock, just asthetically speaking, however the Glock is a nice weapon.
One other reccomendation I would have for you is the new XD line from Springfield Armory, I shot one recently and absolutely love it, they are a very very nice pistol. I would highly reccomend it. I know it comes in .40 S&W, along with 9MM and .45 I believe.

Chip is right. For the price and feel, the Springfield is a super nice gun. Plus it has the trigger safety and compression safety on the handle. So, the gun needs to be mounted before it can be fired.

Our Dept. just switched to the XD .45. I was carrying a Sig which I love, but the XD is a very nice weapon. I would recommend one to anyone in the market. As well as guns are being made today, and as little as people are shooting, I would not hesitate to find a nice used one. Check www.summitgunbroker.com
He is outside K.C., Mo. and he has a lot of used and law enforcement trade ins available at nice prices.

My buddy shoots a glock in .40, getting hard to find ammo that is affordable for it, I prefer my Sprinfield Armory model1911 loaded in .45. Very accurat and is one fine weapon. I have a large collection of weapons but always go to that one first. I also like the browning 9mm both are all steel which I also prefer. If you can find a shooting place that rents weapons, you may be able to try many different types and brands to findthe one that fits you best and shoots the best for you.

Mark brings up a good point, you may want to research ammo prices and availability in different calibers before the purchase.
I can tell you this much, as soon as you put an XD in your hands it kinda sells itself. Very ergonomical feel for me. Classy little pistol.

Any problems with them so far Southwind?

Just a thought,
Chip

The XD is the first double action only that has been a pleasure to shoot. The factory trigger is as nice as any custom job you can do to a Glock or any other DAO pistols. Having said that, I own Glocks 31,32, and 33 and have the .40 cal barrel for each as well. Springfield outdid themselves when designing this weapon!

I have a Springfield Armory XD in .357 SIG
LOVE IT! :D :D :D

Had a Glock and sold it for the XD. Like the feature of the trigger AND Grip safety.

I like the Smith, 990L. Walther frame, Smith slide, and now it comes with a 12 round clip since the laws changed. Use to be 10 round clips only unless you were law enforcement.

There has been some changes over the years with the 9940, now called the OL. Mine had the decocker button on the top of the slide which they got rid of and another change was a shorter trigger pull.

The gun I am considering purchasing purchasing is The Judge, the 45/410 revolver from Taurus.

I really like my Smith & Wesson M&P 40. I was all set to get a glock until I held the M &P.

Our Dept looked pretty hard at the M&P 45 too. The s&w rep brought one out to the range that was real sweet. He later sent us one for testing and evaluation that was not near as nice. Apparently, the one the rep travels with had be tuned up by the custom shop. Every XD .45 we got from the factory was just as nice as the custom M&P. That was the difference between the two.

I got the M&P pro 9mm. Very nice right out of the box. Better trigger on the pro model.
