Seen 1 oz loads from Winchester, but nothing like 1-1/8 much less 1-1/4. Seems like A LOT of shot for a 28.

Those 1 oz loads will turn a bird every which way but loose, btw. Give 'em a try.

i think Kent makes 28 ga. in 1 1/8 loads that is one brand we use at the lodge.

Kent lists only one 28 ga load, in 3/4 oz, on their web site: http://www.kentgamebore.com/index.asp . If they did have a 1-1/8 28 ga, it ain't there.

Remington doesn't have one: http://www.remington.com/products/ammun ... ll/upland/ . Their top is 3/4 oz.

Winchester has a 1 oz: http://www.winchester.com/products/cata ... x?gauge=28

Fiocchi has a 7/8 oz: http://www.fiocchiusa.com/cat_nichel.html

I've probably loaded 10,000 28 ga and twice that many 12, 20 and 410. I'd be very dubious about 1-1/8 oz in a 28 ga. Unless it was depleted uranium.

I bet those heavy loads would kick like a mule in a little 5 1/2 pound 28 gauge! I think I'll just stick with my little 3/4 ounce loads.

When you get one, cut it open and count the pellets. That's the only way, other that weighing them, that you are going to really know. The box is irrelevant. When I first read your post I was thinking you were talking about a "1 1/16 oz" 28 gauge load; which is really an 11/16th oz load (European load) with some sloppy printing. I have seen those.

I don't believe that you can fit 1 1/8 oz in a 2 3/4" 28 gauge shell, especially in #4 shot. None of the reloading catalogs I can find show a load like that. Heck, none show a 1 1/8 oz load in a 2 3/4" 20 gauge.

That's good to know. I'll try to look them up. I've shot the 1 oz Winchester loads with great success. But, when I put them to paper, they don't pattern as well (consistent, uniform) as the 3/4 oz.

Have you had a chance to get your hands on those loads yet?

I emailed Nobelsport aking about a 1 1/8 oz 28ga load, and they gave me the following reply.
Here is a listing of all our 28 gauge loads:

ANS286 Hunting 28 2 3/4 MAX 3/4 6 1300
ANS2875 Hunting 28 2 3/4 MAX 3/4 7 1/2 1300
ANS288 Hunting 28 2 3/4 MAX 3/4 8 1300
ANSH284 Hunting 28 2 3/4 MAX 1 4 1205
ANSH285 Hunting 28 2 3/4 MAX 1 5 1205
ANSH286 Hunting 28 2 3/4 MAX 1 6 1205
ANSH2875 Hunting 28 2 3/4 MAX 1 7 1/2 1205
ANSH288 Hunting 28 2 3/4 MAX 1 8 1205

Oddly enough, I'm headed in the opposite direction... shooting a 28 ga. load in my 20..

I load 3/4 ounce of lead into the AA 20, and it is one sweet shooting load. Didn't mean to hijack a 28 ga. thread, just thought some might be interested.

I have never got any 1 oz. loads to pattern worth a crap in any of my 28 gauges. If you THINK you need more than 3/4oz.;
just grab the 20. WDO

Always wondered why 28 gauge doesn't bother with 3" chambers/shells. I believe it's the only gauge.

Because the 2-3/4" is perfect.

I have a 28 ga 1100 special sporting that has a tricked out barrel (extra long forcing cones, back bored, long chokes) that patterns the 1 oz loads "OK". But nothing patterns like those 3/4 oz.

Yes you can do 1 1/8 oz loads for 28 ga. but as in a 410 or 12 to 10 gauge oz to oz it's not the same due to shot string and deformation / ie flyers due to narrow bore.
Use hodgon hs-6 ( ball powder uses less space and BP wad heavy 28 gauge wad.
I use it on Pheasants with nickel 5s and 1285 fps , wow it works.
Out of the box the Fiochhi nickel 5s in 28 gauge are excellent.
good luck

It seems to me that using extra heavy loads in a 28ga. would contradict the reason for using a 28, which from my understanding is because, with the proper load it throws a superior pattern to the larger guages. If you need a heavier load, why not use a bigger guage, which would pattern better with the heavier load. Just asking. :?

RST loads a 3/4 oz 1100 fps shell that I really enjoy shooting. If i do my part they do theirs. I would hate to shoot heavy loads out of my 28 as it would go against why I shoot it in the first place. Easy to carry up and down the hills and low recoil.

When you stuff in a heavier load than what the shell was really designed for,you are just slowing it down.

Every gauge has a load that patterns well....no secret in the 28 re any factor.
Every gauge can enable a long shot either thru luck, a misreading of range or ego.
The 28 is simply a 30ish yard cartridge that shines best with 3/4 ounce and 7 1/2s on ruffed grouse-sized or smaller birds.
Pheasants need a little more luck and a good dog but most any gamebird will drop to a 28 under the right circumstances.
Biggest problem with the 28 is that too many folks use too much choke.
Less choke is better than more shot weight in the 28's baliwick.

I use a 28 on a 20 frame with 28" barrels @ 6 1/4 # with Kents or Estates....good but never will equal my 12 BUL with any load appropriate to the bird.
A 28 is good...but never better.

I shoot a 28 ga with 3/4 oz. of #7-1/2's on South Dakota roosters, & it's deadly under 30 yards. (Shooting over a pointer puts most of my shots around 20 yards anyway. I don't do any "group" or driven hunts, I'm usually by myself, so my shots are close.) I've tried the 1 oz load of #6's to extend the range a little, but it didn't help. I'm sticking with the 3/4 oz loads.
