Mauser 98

Hi everyone, I need your advice.

I would like to get a gun to try deer hunting. However since I am not convinced that I will like it all that much being used to walking while hunting, I was thinking I will not spend a fortune on a rifle.

I have been lurking rifles in stores but the price begins too high for me.

I saw a mauser 98 (1940) used here and wondering if it could be a good buy

I spoke to the guy and he said the rifle is in excellent condition and very precise. He has been hunting with it for the last 10 years. He said a professional verified it and said that the rifle has less then 1000 bullets under its belt. He is asking 350$ CAN

My other option to go cheap would be a Remington 770 that probably comes with a very cheap scope.

What do you guys think?

another option is a sporterized lee enfield they're plentiful cheap reliable and great stopping power and accurate, plus what you save on the gun you can spend on optics

Depending on your range, buy a used Marlin 336 or Win 94 in 30-30. the $350 seems a bit high for that gun. Mitchell's Mausers out of California is selling top notch 98s for less than that.

I own both a M336 30-30 and a K98 Yugo Mauser from Mitchell's. Trust me, buy the 30-30 unless you're shooting out past 150 yards.

Can't see if the Mauser has a scope but the 770 does and a 270 will have twice the range of the old 8x57 catridge with less drop. Would cost more than $100 to drill and tap and but any scope.

Not sure how long your shots are going to be but if less than 100 yds then try a rifled choke tube in your shotgun.

For many shotguns you can purchase a rifled slug barrel pretty cheap.

You know, I recently got a Mosin Nagant (7.62 x 54r ammo) for deer and I have been very happy with it so far.

Milsurp ammo is about $10 for 50 and legal hunting ammo is about $8-12/20 depending on the brand.

If you have a type 3 FFL (Curio and Collector's permit) you can get a hand-picked Mosin for under $100.
