Beretta 3901 series??

Post by otto » Sat Oct 27, 2007 3:07 pm

I've been looking at the Beretta 3901 series of guns. What can anyone tell me about them?

I'm looking for both Pros and Cons on how they shoot, pattern, clean up, whatever you can tell me.

The gun will be used primarily for waterfowl and I want it in 12ga.

Thanks for everyones help

I've had one for about 2 years now and I love it. It fits me well and I shoot it better than any other gun I've owned. I cannot recall a single cycling problem with it and I've put a lot of shells through it. Its easy to clean up in my opinion as well. I think its a great deal for the price. It is pretty much the same gun as the 390, I bought a 390 barrel and use it on my 3901.

Thank you mtlee, BTW is that your GSP on the side? How do you keep him/her warm in cold water?

No problem. That is Maggie, my shorthair. I have a vest for her but cold water doesn't really exist around here so I don't think its a big deal. It was in the 70s some days last winter when we were duck hunting

She's a gorgeous dog.

I'm not too far from you (Virginia). I had been thinking about getting a Lab because of their ability to stand the cold. My father always had GSP's but would have to stop hunting when it got too cold, but that was in Germany. I've always loved the breed and would get one if I could think of a way to keep her warm.

Thanks for the reply

Thanks for the kind words. I'm assuming you're talking about the water being too cold and having to stop waterfowl hunting, not stop upland hunting. I really don't know how cold it gets in VA, but I think the GSPs can handle cold water better than some of the other shorthaired breeds. The vest does help, but it has its limits. You could always get a GWP if you want to be able to hit colder water and upland hunt.

Yes, I meant the water. He never had much problem for upland until it got too cold for him. of course father would blame it on the dogs (you could almost see the dogs roll their eyes at him).

Again thank you for the help on both the dogs and the gun.

I bought a 20 gauge 3901 Statesman from "bleep"' back in August for $499.00. . .they were clearancing that one out for some reason. . .I asked the guy if I could see it and he said the clearance tag had been on for about 2 hours. I bought it for the wife's first gun, I was thinking 20 gauge youth 870, but this gun is far better than an 870. I haven't had one problem with it, pretty simple system to clean as well.

That is a good price on a Beretta auto of any kind that is new, I wish I could find a deal like that around here.
What is the difference in the 3901 and the 391 that I shoot?

From my understanding the 3901 is a 390/391 hybrid. It uses parts from both. I think it was a way to create a marketing hype and get rid of some 390 parts. Thats what I've heard. I love mine.

This is pretty close. The only 391 parts were those that were interchangeable between the two models. The 3901 is functionally a 390. It is an excellent autoloader for the price. It might be the best value on a shotgun going right now.
