Was thinking about picking up a small pistol for plinking but with a little punch and heard about the Markarov 9x18.
Anybody have information - Good/Bad - or alternatives?

Anything bigger than a 22 is too loud and too expensive to plink. I have several but they sit in thew case while we play with the 22s.

Willie - some buds and I all bought Maks a few years back from a local dealer. I think it was 5 pistols all together. The dealer ordered them and they came in various conditions but all were decent. Some had tigther action than others, etc. Its a decent lil plinker that is very reliable and trouble free.

I like Smith's in 38 spec. I load up 148gr wadcutter's with 2.5 grs bullseye and it's as nice and accurate as you can get. I make the bullet's out of used wheel weight's and their cheaper than 22 LR's.

if you are interested in inexpensive communist design pistols, you should look at the tokarev 7.65s. ammo is cheap, bullets zip. pistol is trouble free. best tackle box gun in the world. for plinking with a nice gun get a .22.

If your are looking for a cheap american made pistol check out the Hi-point 9mm it is a decient gun for the price and it always fires. Plus the bullets are cheaper than the 9 x 18.

I've been doing research on different type of pistols for plinking and for concealed and carry - From everything I've seen and researched, you guys are exactly right - for plinking a 22 is the way to go. Any recommendations for your favorite models?

One more question, from other posts I've been reading, I see a lot of larger framed guns - 40 cal etc., being recommended for concealed and carry - Not sure I want to go with something that large, I have a Redhawk 44 mag with a 7-1/2" barrel and don't necessarily want to carry it around on me. (kind of defeats the concealed aspect) What smaller framed models would you recommend in the $200 to $400 price range?

hipoints are great to melt down on the stove... pot metal cheap guns. i would not waste my money. for the price of a hi point, you can buy a used mackarov for the same price

glock, perfection...

i carry a g19 myself, used to carry a g17... i prefer the 9mm simply from cost of ammo. 15rd clip sure makes things nice.

my brittany can field strip and clean a glock... nothing to it.

can be had new for around 400

I agree. I've put hundreds of rounds through a buddies .40 and it's always gone bang. Not one FTF or FTE. We always take it out when camping/quading etc. b/c it doesn't matter if it gets messed up. Lifetime warranty. Of course there are better but it is what it is.

For .22 pistols it's hard to beat a ruger IMO. Browning makes a nice one to, the buckmark.

For plinking, rec. shooting I still stick with the .38 specials, .40 S&W, and a few .357 or .460 mixed in for a little more bang!

For carry I use a .40. IMO if it's that serious that I need to use a gun in self defense, I want the most power I can to stop that threat, yet at the same time being easily concealed. Just my .02.
