Weatherby renigs on warranty

Post by dhondtm » Mon Nov 28, 2005 11:13 pm

My o/u Weatherby Athena has been in the shop for nearly two months now which is just 4 months after my purchase. The stock was loose fitted and it caused it to crack after putting 200 - 300 rounds through it.

The gunsmith at Weatherby makes claim that the damage is not caused by recoil and instead suggests it was caused by pressure. Having never dropped the gun and taking great care of it I find it hard to believe. I asked what would keep this from happening again, what kind of warranty would I get if they fix it? Same warranty coverage which obviously isn't much. I asked how else could this of happened by pressure, what exactly did he mean? He said it happens quite often and can happen with any named brand. Pressure from another gun pressing against it in the gun rack. Pressure from a lab laying on your gun. I laughed and just shook my head disgust.

I am now under the belief that the gun was damaged when I purchased it and I just got a lemon *caugh* screwed. I plan to take it up with Sportsmans next, but I am sure they will just claim no responsibility. I guess I won't be purchasing from Sportsmans in the future and I won't be trusting warranties from Weatherby.

It sounds liek a screwing. I'd flat out let em have it till they replace the stock or gun completely.

I am guessing Sportsman's is a largerr chain stype store? If so, your situation is the exact reason I deal with gun shops instead of Super-stores like Bass pro, Wal-mart, Gander Mountain or the like whenever I go to buy a shotgun. I imagine Gander, Bass Pro and Cabela's probably aren't bad on customer service but I can't imagine taking a gun back to Wal-Mart with a problem and doign anything about it. The guy I get my firearms from is an authorized service center for Remington and several other brands and is a genius as a gunsmith and one heck of a nice guy.

Could they have been refering to pressures from a hand load (to hot a load)? Not that you would have been shooting anything that drastic but just a thought.

If Weatherby doesnt cover it under there warranty then I would be sceptical of there product. I am assuming you bought it new since you said it was purchased at Sportsmans. I would think that the manufacturer would just fix it so they dont get a bad wrap.

Thats to bad you got a lemon. Hopefully Sportsmans will give you better customer sevice.

Getting Results

dhondth,
I had a similar problem with no where to go. Wait till the outdoor shows come around. Find the Weatherby display and rep. If he blows you off. Stay hanging at the booth. Every time somebody comes by asking questions to the rep. Talk about how great the Weatherby warranty is and how they stand by it. You will get satisfaction.

No doubt that actually works! Sales reps dont like people bad mouthing their product with mass numbers of people around.

Hope everything works out. . . I have had great customer service with Gander Mountain and they cover everything on my guns without any questions asked so far.

Let us know if anything else happens with this, I would check out shotgunworld.com as well for advice.

I'll write a follow up once I get more details, at this point I don't even care anymore. When it rains it pours.... Now FedEX lost a package of mine (xmas present I ordered) which they claim was delivered and between 3:40 and 5:00 it grew legs. I have some reliable neighbors that were putting lights up and say no FedEx truck ever delivered anything today, yet they claim it was delieved. Of course the stupid shippers of the product didn't bother saying a signature was required for an item that was over $1k which is just rediculous.

sorry, I am venting........

dhondtm, Demand the GPS record of the delivery truck. Every one of those trucks has a tracker on it. That will prove if it was on your street or not......"pear"

Good advice pear, but good luck finally came when it turned up at the other neighbors house. whew what a relief, I'll think twice next time about making sure if I order something on-line that they require a signature.

Sometimes it pays to buy from the big guy. The larger chanels have a lot more pull with their suppliers.

The same type thing happened to me many years ago with Weatherby. I had to Write lot's of letters, make lots of threats and phone calls. Eventually they honored their commitment. The squeaky wheel gets the grease!

Good luck........

And KEEP on squeaking, and squeaking, and squeaking. Make them honor warranty. Find out when the rp is going to be at Sportsmans, and spend a little time talking to him.
Had a similar problem with "St Croix" fishing rods. "Lifetime Warranty" to them is 2 years, I paid for lifetime warranty. Broke after 3 years. I paid 100 bucks each for these rods FOR THE WARRANTY. Took a lot of squeaking at the local shop when the rep was there, But I walked out with 3 new rods, and a fancy ball cap to boot.

I quit buying Weatherbys years ago for this same reason. The monry they want for them is a joke, when they do not back them up. I buy Sako and Benelli now. No problems. I lost the bolt handle out of an SBE II. I called benelli and had a new one in a couple days. No questions asked. Weatherby's fit and finish has gone to the dogs. I looked at a new Deluxe the other day and the fit of the stock was horrible. It will catch up with them.
