I feel like a traitor

Post by highcotton » Wed Apr 09, 2008 10:24 pm

I have shot sxs's since my dad gave me an Iver Johnson Skeeter for my 9th birthday. I have shot them in 20 gauge and mainly in SKB 200E models.

Last year I noticed I was missing more birds than normal. I am older and slower now and can't see nearly as good as I used to. I decided to get a 12 gauge so I could throw a little more shot their way. I started looking at 12 gauge sxs's and they all felt like chuncky 2x4's. The high end models felt good but I cant morgage my house to get one of those.

So, I got a Bennelli Ultralight 12 gauge with 24"bbl. I love how the gun handles and have an idea it will shoot where it points. I can't wait to shoot it this weekend. I still feel like I am disapointing my dad...have images of him turning over in his grave. :)

yep your a traiter...better send me your old gun so that it doesn't feel abandoned

It's tough to give up on something that has been a part of your hunting gear for a long time. When I lost the first knife my dad give me, the one that skinned my first buck, it's replacement worked but it wasn't the same. It probably doesn't help but at it's most basic a gun is just a tool that helps get a job done. More birds and more birds killed cleanly is a better alternative than hanging onto something too long if it's not getting the job done. If it makes you feel any better your replacement gun is #1 on the list for my next upland gun, lightweight, sleek, and with more verstility than the 20 gauge.

Not much you can do about age Cotton. Now that I'm up in my 60's, I miss birds that were gimme's a few years ago. It's depressing. I like filling the air with lead also. The twelve I'm shooting is a Ruger GL SXS in 12 at 6# 3oz. I bought it when they were $1900.00. That being said, look at a CZ Bobwhite. You can still get them on gunsamerica.com or gunbroker.com for about $650.00. They are the finest buy on the SXS market today.

Like I said, the older you get, the more you'll miss. Doesn't matter if you're shooting a gattling gun. It's the law.
LIFE WITHOUT BIRD DOGS AND FLY RODS REALLY ISN'T LIFE AT ALL.

HighCotton--did you buy it locally?

I have wanted one of those every since they came out with them. I have a Benelli M1 12ga I have shot since 1995. Best gun I have ever owned.

I shoot a Beretta autoloader w/ a 24" bbl....I love the "pointability" that barrel length offers.....I'm sure your dad would understand!

I got it at Marks in Birmingham.

The Tennessee Quail Unlimited folks needed me to judge their state trial Saturday so I still haven't tried it out. I plan to work some dogs tomorrow afternoon so I will fire it up and give y'all a report.
