Out West

Spent the past couple weeks in the Eastern Sierras and the Great Basin of Nevada chasing chukar, quail and huns. Lots of good times with the family and a good friend from college came down from Montana with his young Spinone. Had a great time with my wife daughter and in-laws in the Sierras. Lots of birds, ghost towns/mines to explore, snow play with the little one and movies in the RV. I dropped them off at home and headed north at the end of the first week.

My cousin went above and beyond when he and his friend who is a wildlife biologist for fish and game went and scouted our usual haunts for birds in some brutally cold weather the days before I arrived. First day of the Nevada hunt the temps didn’t break 7 degrees, but with no wind, sunshine and deep snow, we were in t-shirts working hard most of the day. We managed to stay on the birds every day of the trip.

All told, we all had a great time. My setter hunted really well and held up unscathed in some pretty tough conditions. Plenty of birds for all and good meals and good bourbon by the fire every evening. Life is good!

Looks like a lot of fun(and work). In your tailgate pictures, that one bird sure doesn't look like a chukar :?
I can't believe you found a mallad in that country  :?: :?:
Very nice pictures--Thanks for sharing your hunt with us :!: :!:

When everything is frozen over, they will head to some pretty tiny warm ground springs for water. We usually jump a few late season.

oldbeek,
I was thinking the exact same thing attempting to keep up with my 21 year old cousins who fire fight all summer from a helicopter. Those boys can blow through deep snow and steep country like it is a walk in the park!!!

Yes they are, (Dog Den and an Uplander). They are normally content to stay in the truck box on hunting trips, but with the family in tow, staying a whole week in the same spot, snow in the forecast and some day time highs in the 20’s, I figured they and we would be much happier with them staying outside in their dog houses rather than crated all day if we were not going to be hunting full time or holed up during bad weather. My trailer has a garage area for bikes and gear, I was able to fit both of them in pretty easily.

Any updates on your health? Hopefully recovering from a successful surgery?

Surgeon didn't like the MRI and ordered another. I still have cushion in the joint. He is now feeling that I have sever Bursitis. Cortisone cleared it up for a week. Dang pain comes and goes. Wish I could figure it out. My nephew that competes in iron man type stuff thinks I am a bionic man and I have 15 years on him.
