S.Dak. resident only on public ground

Post by weimdogman » Mon Oct 12, 2020 8:20 pm

The last 3 days have been pheasant opener for residents only ,only on public ground. Ran all 3 dogs
I hunted 3 hours yesterday and it was brutal .from 75 to 80 and 20+mph wind. Already dangerously dry. Scenting conditions were terrible but found some birds and had a couple of nice points where the birds held. Missed the only rooster I had a chance on but Delio worked him well, trail, point, steady to wing and shot. I haven't drilled on steady to shot just 2 times in the last week on pigeons from a release.

Today was from 65 to 72 and wind at 17mph but it dropped to 8/10 at dusk. I only hunted 2 hours with Wiilie today as I have done the least work with him and 2 friends want to borrow him during the season. He points well and is crazy about retrieves. He isn't as bold as my other 2 and needed today. We got on plenty of birds and he got 2 retrieves 1 from water. He is solid on point to the point where it's hard to get him to reposition . Verbal commands spook wild birds I want my dogs to move ahead on their own after I am in front of them.

He did begin to catch on and I am sure the 1 friend who demands a solid close working dog will be thrilled.

Hi Mike, glad you found a few birds. If you want to get together some day for a hunt let me know.

Yeah man that wind was a bear. The pheasants seem to tolerate it better than some of the other species but just not a lot of fun to hunt when it’s howling like that. Glad you got into some birds!

And it was only breezy compared to tomorrow's forecast😉
