I hope everyone is having a great hunting season so far. The season has been good to me and my dogs. Morgen and I have had the opportunity to help out with some of our state's learn to hunt weekends for Pheasant and Waterfowl. Morgen got to retrieve some ducks and I had a blast with every kid I got to handle my dog for and mentor. Grouse season has been short this year, mainly because I want to give Morgen more exposure to waterfowl hunting.
The first week of Pheasant has proved to be productive and has enhanced the dog's progressions. In Wisconsin, it is easy to walk a short distance from the parking lots and get a bird or two. There is nothing wrong with this, as some have some physical limitations: my dad has both knees replaced and it is more work for him to move around as he gets older. While I am young and able, I made it a responsibility to do the complete opposite and work the dogs on the far ends of the properties we hunt. Sometimes it takes considerably longer to walk where I want to hunt, but hunting isn't just for me it is for the dogs too. I even made it harder on them by not shooting hens on the properties that allow you to!! And when we do limit out, they go on the leash and we practice healing the rest of the way. With hard work and patience, we have had a bag full every time we have gone out this year and even later last year when I started doing this with the pup. It is my hope that funds permitting after all the "games" we put the dogs in around here, I can take a trip out to the Dakotas or some other place we do not call home. But honestly, it is hard to leave when you are having fun "in your backyard" watching your dogs work.
Hopefully many good adventures are taking place with each and every one of you this season!

Re: Hunting Season so far
Glad you're enjoying your season so far with your hunting partner.
We've been enjoying the season as well....No waterfowl for us just woodcock, grouse, and a few phez outings as of late.....
Havin a good time but really need to put a few more grouse in the freezer

Re: Hunting Season so far
The four we had gotten earlier in the season are already eaten, I hear ya on the grouse. Going to be up north for a few days starting Thursday. Hopefully we will get to go out and get some more too!
