Hi, all.

What sort of kit does everyone take with when going out in the field? I think I've got the super obvious things down: shotgun, ammo, water, basic first aid kit, cellphone, whistle, remote (for the collar), hunting license, ID???

What sort medkit gear do you take for the dog? Do you take anything to deal with skunk spray or snares or anything else? I know you can't prepare for every possibility, but what are some of the most commonly needed items that no hunter should be without in the field? And what sort of gear should be kept in the truck that would probably be good to have on hand, but not something that's needed to be carried out in the field?

I'm a first time hunter (or will be in a few weeks anyhow), so I want to appeal to the collective wisdom of everyone else to help me be as prepared as possible.

Cheers,

Greg

Greg,

If you do a search - above right, you'll find a ton of posts on what folks take as an "emergency kit" and also an excel file (I think it was excel) that you can use to print off and check off items. I think Scott Linden compiled that based on everyone's response to a question about what goes in your dog emergency kit.

Hmm. I'm using Tapatalk on my phone at the moment and I'm not seeing that info. But I'll definitely check it out when I'm on a PC. Thanks for the tip!

I reviewed those other threads and saw that there's certainly a lot that can be taken with. I ended up getting this one from gundogsupply.com:

It seems to have most of what everyone else was suggesting in those various thread. I suppose I may have saved a little coin by piecing everything together by myself, but to me convenience has a value unto itself. Plus, this one comes with a separate/smaller pack so you can take the really important bits with you as an emergency field kit and leave the rest in the truck for anything else. I also picked up a tube of EMT gel since that wasn't listed in the kit's contents.

I carry a quality pair of dykes in the field, never know if you're going to get a dog snagged in barbed wire.

Yeah, that's a good call. I was thinking about some sort of cutter for taking care of snares if I run into them. I suppose they would work on barbed wire, too.
