Marine Pre-Afghanistan Idaho Grouse Hunt

I have to deploy to Afghanistan again this fall. Instead of letting another hunting season go to waste, i've decided to plan a September grouse hunt to Northern Idaho. I have a little, female, french brittany that will be tagging along with me. I'm just wondering if anyone has any good tips for chasing blues and ruffs in the mountains? I've hunted every other upland bird before just never ruffs/blues in the mountains. I'll be hunting in the CDA, Sandpoint, and Bonners Ferry area.

As of now the research i've done is as follows: Read as much on "Forest Grouse" hunting as I could find, called the forest/game wardens and asked advice, and been studying maps upon maps.

Also, is anyone interested in meeting up for a hunt?

Thanks!

I'm sorry I can't help much as I have never hunted that far north. It would be a good idea to inquire as to the wolf population in the areas you are planning to hunt. I mention this because two gsps were just killed by wolves farther south. There have also been hounds, setters, and many other dogs killed in the last few years. Most of all be careful on your deployment and thank you for your service.

Hey Marine,

I don't know about Idaho, but, come down here and I can take you for Blues. Take care.

Marine, I've worked in the area just south of where you plan to hunt, Palouse and Clearwater area. Hunt old logged areas with aspen, alder, shiney leaf ceanothus, elderberry and snowberry present. I would stay high on the ridge for blues and hunt the draws for ruffs. If you get down to the south east part of the state let me know. Good luck and thanks for your service
