Cortez, Colorado

Post by Flatlander » Fri Mar 08, 2013 3:12 pm

Hi...I'm new here, but I was wondering if anyone had information of bird hunting around Cortez, Colorado. I will be moving there from NE Wyoming, where I have enjoyed excellent grouse, okay pheasant and poor partridge hunting. I love any kind of bird hunting and don't mind hard hiking or rocky scrambling in pursuit of game. It looks like the Dusky grouse hunting and maybe Ptarmigan should be good, but faint rumors suggest that there may be Pheasant or Chukar in the area. Any information that anyone has would be great. I'm always up for meeting new people, too.

Thanks,
Ben
PS: I also love to Fly Fish, which looks great in the area.

Hey Ben,

There are a couple of guys from that part of the country on this board and I am sure they will chime in. Cortez is not far from great fishing; the San Juan River below Navajo, the rivers and streams in the San Juan Mountain range, further north even more streams and rivers. I love Dusky hunting and do it here in NM. The San Juan Mountains have a lot of Dusky opportunities. As far as other species, I have never hunted in CO; fished yes, never hunted. There is also Ptarmingan in the mountains but haven't tried for them, either.

Welcome to our part of the Rockies.

You're probably not too far from good quail hunting in AZ..and Chukars in UT...
