Kansas public land birds

Post by Meatballs » Wed Dec 26, 2012 8:12 pm

Diesel and i hit flint hills nwr and never pushed one bird. Habitat looked great and we had a great time but open to suggestions for productive public ground. We just moved here last weekend and trying to get in some late season hunting. Thanks, matt and diesel

Theres your problem right there.

I will translate for you

Public ground = Any city boy with a dog and gun comes here every weekend blasting at anything that flys or resembles a bird.

These grounds generally get hunted hard all year or until they prove to be unproductive (generally from being hunted hard). You would be better off driving some back country with a phone book and land owners map.

There is some good walk in ground down by Osage city, look on your map and you can find them. I wouldnt head west of Topeka because of the city boys blasting and pressuring birds. Its to easy for them to take I-70 to get to those places

If you want to go hunting give me a call and I will "try" to put you on some birds. I havent found many this year. I know they are out there though cause I have seen them all year long. Conditions are tough on the dogs with no moisture until now

We hunted around clay center this year and in one are around Milford we were walking out as another group was walking in. Later that day there was a different group walking in the same area and that was the middle of the week.

Milford gets hit very hard with Ft Riley, JC, and Manhattan all close and also a short jump out I-70 from Topeka. It can be a tough row to hoe finding birds there. All are very educated and those that aren't are dead.

We talk about this all the time while we labor up the chukar hills! All the pheasant country around UT gets hammered, but I rarely if ever run into anyone on my chukar spots! The steep mtns keep em away! But people will pound the flat ditch banks and fence lines all day!

I guide 90% of the time for a preserve out west here, but offer to guide on the ground I have too. This year is the worst year I have sen for birds in 14 years of living here and have turned down 44 guys that have choose this year to want to have me guide them. Dosent make since when most everybody knows how bad it is out here. FYI if your going to hunt public get of the beaten path go to the far end of the property that is there most guys wont stray to far from the pickup truck or suv, but if you go to the back 40 you might get into them.
