Nevada Chukar Season

Post by Willie Hunter » Fri Oct 12, 2012 8:08 am

The Nevada chukar season opens tomorrow. My PL Carter has been retired, it is always sad when a fine dog gets to this stage, but I sure have some great memories of chukar hunting with him. So, we move on and the 2 setters will be on the ground for the next 4 months doing what they love.

Seeing dogs go from endless energy to stiff and sore is sure tough. And it seems to happen in the blink of an eye. At least your pup got to spend his time doing what he loved, what he was meant for.

My older GWP is in her 10th season, and still will hunt hard all day if let her. However, she will then get stiff and sore once she cools down and tightens up. I do not let her hunt that long anymore, but she so wants to go!!!

How are the chukar numbers looking this year?

The chukar numbers are down and a bad hatch this spring. The good thing is we had good carry over so there will be birds to hunt.

The food sources around water is the key I believe. Guzzlers have no food around them and some are dry anyway. Streams , ponds. seeps, springs that flow all thew time are the way to go.

Seeing decent numbers but the birds are definitely not youngsters. They have been flushing at 40+yards every time I have run into them.
