South Dakota chickens and sharptails

Post by ACooper » Thu Sep 27, 2012 2:19 pm

Met several friends in Valentine, NE and hunted chickens and sharpies together for a few days across the state line in South Dakota. Tony (volsfan) and Phillip (prariehunter) and several other people and a truck load of dogs set out across the prairies in search of birds, and we found a bunch of them. It was too hot and too dry to get much dog work, and many of the birds the dogs did get pointed wouldn't sit long enough to get in gun range. We had a ton of 100-200 yard wild flushes. We were able to get some birds handled, and overall had a great time.

We left out last week and went by the INV in Iowa and watched Saturday before heading out to SD. Saw some very good dogs and was exposed to What others are doing with their dogs. Bought a 20 dollar ticket and dang if i didn't win the new Garmin Alpha. On to SD and met up with Andy and his dad, along with Fred Rice, Phillip and others. Although very hot and dry, we finally got some good dog work Prairie Chicken , Sharptail and a bunch of phez. Saw hundreds of birds along with other wildlife. Great trip and look forward to hunting with guys again that i had only known thru this site. Just sent Andy some pics to put up. If anyone gets a chance to go and hunt SD on wild birds, DO IT... Thanks to Fred for putting this together. Tony

Dave I might make one more trip this season, but most of my hunting is done much closer to home, usually within 40-60 miles. Last year I didn't get to take any trips, this year I hope to squeeze in one more.
