Well MN is 1/2 way from my house to MT

Post by M1Tanker » Wed Aug 17, 2011 7:13 pm

I figure that Bemidji is almost 1/2 way from Gwinn, MI to where I am staying in Montana, so I am thinking I may check out the Chippewa National Forest for grouse hunting.

Anyone have any experience in that neck of the woods? Not looking for secret covers, etc...you all know I am a die-hard grouser and I just would like to know if that area is worth the stop for a day or two?

You will do pretty good in that area.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing. I head up to the Hibbing area every fall, but pass through a lot of grousy-looking country on the way up. I may have to make a few pit stops this year...always like to try new areas!

I was up in Bemidji in the beginning of August and took an hour walk through the woods and saw 3. They were all together but last year I probably kicked up 5-10 each day I went.

It is definitely worth your time! Always have good grouse hunting up there and last year was the best in a long time. We are on the down slide of the cycle I believe after peaking last year, but I am sure it will still be great!

If you are going grouse hunting in Mn. and driving through N.D. why would you want to hunt MT?

Bemidji area is good for grouse, might have a littel more pressure in that area and in Grand Rapids than over Hibbing way or where Im at. Im 2.5 hrs north of Bemidji. Good grouse numbers here this year. If you are going on HWY 2, try north of Deer River area, just west of Grand Rapids about 15 miles. IMO, a little better to get a few miles from either Bemidji or GR. North of Deer River is really good. We have a cabin there and were there 2 weeks ago, saw plenty, no more than last ear I dont think, but no less either.

I went to the Cloquet SF two falls ago and was very happy with the number of birds we moved(20-30) in two afternoons with just me and two dogs down. How is the Gwinn area for grouse? I have a BIL that has a place outside of Gwinn on the Escanaba R. Was there in the summer and the only ones I saw were right outside his property on the gravel road back to his place.
