Who gives a coot ...
Who gives a coot ...
It was his first waterfowl species and he was excited to have a bird before me.

You better watch out you may never get a shot again.
Don't know if you ever ate them, but there is a recipes.
Some ole timers liked them but they talked them selves into liking everything.
I always wanted to have one of those mounted as though it would be running on the water to take off. Be a nice trophy for your boy.
Enjoy every moment.

The best part of training is seeing the light come on in your little prot'eg'e.

Nothing wrong with that. We often let kids down here pop a few coots on slow mornings so they don't start thinking hunting is boring.
FWIW, last year, I had a friend insist that I take a bunch (around 25) home with me. Not wanting to be impolite, I agreed, and not wanting to be wasteful, and also on his insistence, I breasted them. I also had a mess of teal and decided to pan fry both in butter and have a taste test. I'll be darned if I didn't prefer the coot, although, I sure don't turn my nose up at teal.

Two cannibals were eating a clown. One looks up at the other and says, "Does this taste funny to you?"

@Coldwater Coots are technically in the rail family so he still can get his first waterfowl.
Man I need to make me a poule d’eau hunt. Oh poule d’eau translates to chicken of the water.
