Birds of the North
Birds of the North
with all this great weather (5 degrees) I couldn't stay in the house a second longer so Banks and I headed to the hills to do some training. Once I arrived in the area I was looking to spend some time I noticed a group of birds on the hill side. I left banks in the truck and I decided to put the sneak on em' in hopes of busting some of them before they busted me. Up the mountain I go slipping and sliding on the snow covered rocks and some how they saw me... but I managed to bust two birds out of the group.
One flapped its way down to the road so I let banks out of the truck to see what he would do since this was the first time he has retrieved a live bird and boy was he amp'd. I lined him up and sent him on the retrieve. The bird was flapping its wings and banks didn't know what to think about it but after a couple toot toots on the whistle he picked up the bird and delivered it back with a nice gentle grip.
I guess he felt like posing for the camera...

Nice photo. Looks like he did a great job. How far north are you?
Re: Birds of the North
I'm up here in fairbanks taking advantage of all the upland birds. Rough grouse in the fall then shift to hunting ptarmigan in the winter. I love it up here
Re: Birds of the North
Is that bird the dog has a ptarmigan. I have never seen one.

Wow... great story & pics to boot! Interesting to see how they feet are feathered for good snow traction.
We're originally from Canada & Pearce has hunted grouse & other birds not found down here in the SE, but not Ptarmigan. Are they good eating?

Its a dark meat so its a little gamey but I like the way they taste. If you have ever tasted a dove it's kinda similar.
Ptarmigan and eggs on an early fall caribou hunt on the north slope....ymmmm tasty
here is a picture of some willow ptarmigan in their transitional phase. We shot these birds with our bows since the caribou weren't cooperating. We could get within 15-20 yards before they would spook and fly away.

Nice pics--bring back memories- I lived in Gold Stream 74-98 and hunted birds all over incl lots of ptarmigan on Murphy Dome and towards Minto Flats.

Don't know if you are asking me but I will answer anyway.
He is 3 in the pic. If I had a grey bitch around I would look to get lurcher pup from him.
The willow ptarmigan and red grouse are the same bird, different subspecies.
