NH Grouse Trip

Post by The Zephyr » Wed Nov 18, 2009 10:51 am

The contrast of traveling to the arid high prairie of Wyoming and then returning to the headwaters of the Connecticut River is overwhelming. The humidity went from 10 percent to 90 percent. The depth of space reduced from miles to only yards and sometimes-just feet.

This year I’m hunting alone, just the dog and myself. There won’t be a skirmish line.
No one taunting how ”the bird just flew into my pattern”.
This October I’ll put Anna on some good ground and trust her nose.

I hunted her three days.
Image

The first day we flushed four grouse and six woodcock. I harvested one of the four grouse that flushed. Anna retrieved him kindly.

On the second day we flushed six grouse and six woodcock. This being the opener of woodcock season I limited with three timberdoodles. Anna retrieved the first two to hand and then decided to roll in the last one and call the job done.

On the third day we hunted specifically grouse and had ten flushes on ruffs and two woodcock. I dispatched a nice large adult grouse.
Image

In the end, out of the 34 birds we flushed, Anna pointed 30. I only harvested five. Two of the birds taken were wild flushes I kicked up while moving to the dog.

I really don’t want to admit the total number of shots taken.

Don't let John fool you........... he's a good shot & an even better guy!
After his NH trip, I hooked up with John just north of Rangely Lake in Maine
where we spent 2+ days on a guided Woodcock/Grouse hunt.

Both John & his dog Anna were a pleasure to share the woods with.

John,
Not sure if you got the message I left you- but Katy & I will be down at Flaherty
December 4th & 5th for the CVVC Field Trial. I have her entered in Amateur Puppy.

Rob
May all your dog's points be productive & your arrows avoid all timber
