Using Gundog and Terrier together

Post by Dave C » Mon Oct 05, 2009 1:36 pm

I was out early yesterday, only the second time we have shot at this farm and the the cover is unbelievably thick, its all real deep Holy and thorn hedges and big wood piles, last time we only had the Cocker cross but as good as she is, she just dosnt have the spirit to charge through the thick stuff.
So i was asked to take Ted my Terrier, now he is a bushing machine and the thicker the better but he dose have a tendency to get away from me on open land, which isnt a problem when bushing with the Lurchers, but obously frustrating when shooting.
So we were now looking for Pheasants, but there is also allot of Foxes and other vermin in them wood piles so you never know.

I think the all the Pheasants had taken a battering from the storm the night before, typically we had been tripping over them all summer.
But never mind there was enough sport, but not as tasty.

Your use of Ted brought back good memories of my ex-wife's Westie, Bill, who I brought on as a flushing and retrieving dog in an effort to lure his mistress afield. If one was patient, Bill would work woodcock well enough, but his specialty was pushing rabbits and pheasants from the labyrinth of multi-flora rose hells. Didn't, however, have enough leg for most of our pheasant venues. But he was a surprisingly strong little swimmer, and teal and wood duck hunting was right up his ally. Terrier tenacity made him death's shadow on cripples.

So here's a tip of my cap to Ted.
If you think I'm wrong, you might be right.

Thanks Guys, its the first time i have shot over him really and he didn't do bad, its only this farm i will use him because of the extra thick wood piles, but its a run out for him anyway.
My Lab pup is nearly 7 months now so it wont be long before she is getting all the action.

You right Cooper he is classed as a Fell, his Dam was a Border x Lakeland and his Sire was a Fell.
I like the square boxy type as they are very athletic, can cover alot of ground and hard as nails.

Nice work and handy looking dog.

I will really try my JRTxBorder this year on rabbits, shot one over him last year while out for a walk in the woods and he retrieved it.

He dug down through over a foot of snow to find what was left of one caught in a snare.

Although Ted is a Hunting machine :D , his retrieving has much to be desired.

Here he is shredding a Pheasant he caught in the hedge.

Well i spose thats why we have Gundogs

Lets just say that there are not likely to be cripples returned to me by the terrier.

Looking good but doesn't look like a JR to me.

Hey! Are you putting my dog down??

There are jacks and there are jacks. He wouldn't win a conformation contest but he's a jack. They shouldn't be more than 10 inches tall and should be box shaped. Narrow chest for entering holes. Some breeders breed them taller for different hunting purposes. ( Called the JRT and not recognized by any registry.) The short legged ones with front legs pointing out and big chests are common but useless for hunting.

the real thing:

3/8ths Border but looks like what the standard calls for even though the mother was a short legged smooth coated JRT.

Nice looking dog bdb and thanks for the clip.
There is also allot of politics involved in JR Terriers in the UK, i think the pure bred Kennel Club registered dogs are now Parsons Russells, there is 10" and 14" registered with the JR Club of Great Britain (not KC types) which are Jack Russells (although there is allot of the same type unregistered.
Most other working types, which usually have a bit of White Lakeland in them are just called Russells.
I think thats about it although i am no expert and i am sure a few in the UK would be happy to put me right.

here is the official breed standard, this club is interesting in that it doesn't allow reg. until 1 year of age, I like that:
