Post by Elkhunter » Thu May 08, 2008 1:07 pm

Just curious if we have alot of Big Game hunters on the forum? If so did the draws treat you well? Any good hunts planned? I personally drew my elk tag here in UT, which is actually a pretty big deal if you know anything about elk hunting in UT!! :D Anyone else get lucky? Pics from last years hunts?

Here in AZ....
Elk is a draw
antelope is a draw
turkey is a draw
Sheep is a draw
Rifle and Muzzy Deer is a draw
they are slowly turning even the Archery Deer in to a draw

now for the biggest laugh southwest AZ there is some release turned wild pheasant along the yume area which AZ has had a draw for ...the people who put in for this Joke of a hunt because you can not hunt the farm fields and the washes well lets just say pheasant run like a bat out of H3LL with little to no cover

Its good to hear we have some big-game guys! I drew my tag with only 4 points. I put in for a couple of different states:
2 points Rocky Mountain Bighorn Utah
1 point for turkey UT
2 points AZ elk
2 points AZ deer
1 point AZ Desert Bighorn Sheep
3 Points CO deer and elk
2 points WY deer and elk
Waste my $8 application fee in NM every year for deer and elk. 16A 3rd and 17 3rd
Oregon Sheep

You almost have to put in for every state to have a chance to ever draw a decent tag. I will post some pics of my hunt this fall for sure, hopefully a big one falls!

I just put my name in the hat tonight in Oregon for deer, elk, speed goats and sheep. Nothing exciting this year, but should have some points for a decent deer tag next year. It will be a few more years for a decent rifle antelope tag (only have 9 points)

The Oregon system is not bad IMO. Wont know for another 5 weeks or so on our draws.

Might try the out of state stuff starting next year and get some points from those states that work that way.

Three words for you, New Mexico Oryx. It will cost you about $1800 just for the tag if you get drawn but it is in effect a wild African Gemsbock. Stunning trophy in a shoulder mount and the meat is similar to the most tender venison you have ever had. You missed the deadline this year but I would put in for it next year (pre valentines day).

My Dad put in for Montana Deer/Elk combo but didn't draw... took him 2 tries last time when he drew tags. I'm going to try to get into Ontario this fall for black bear.

Nice ox, looks like you didnt have to quater it to far to the boat.Did you get a skull mount or shoulder, and what dose that cost? Im still waiting on my antelope from 06 to get back, taxidermist is starting to get on my bad side.It takes 6 to 8 years for a resident to draw a antlope tag in Ks.but know a archery over the counter is available for in and out of staters.

welll lets just say i am praying hard that with the help of someone on this board whom I will never beable to truely show my full appreciation for his help that I hope someday to see our hides and horns freed of the taxidermist that would make the devil himself look mild. So long story short our usual taxidermist will come to the club house to help us put the musk ox in the best set up to fit what room we have ...When his day comes i will be sure to post picture

As for the hunt it self was the hunt of a lifetime we went through high arctic lodge and If i could I would go again in a heartbeat

we saw pierre (sp?) Caribou Musk Ox obviously Arctic Fox Tundra Swans fished for Lake trout and I even caught an Arctic Char which that was quickly put in the boat to make some shoshomi (sp?) and for a person who loves to fish and is not a fan of eating fish specially raw ..i have to admit the arctic char was good and I even had seconds. Lake trout on the other hand. I was happy to let Bob enjoy mine was a bit strong in the fishy smell and taste but i did try it

musk ox meat is awesome...better then scimitar oryx that is also extremely good

price well we saved up for the hunt adding the airlines flight to and from edmonton hotel 2 nights and added baggage expense coming home it was about 10,000 each when all was said and done

getting on the musk ox was a slow process but we were able to get with in 30-40 yards

the wind is what makes it more difficult as the gust can wreack havoc even at closer distances ..I only pull a little over 50 pounds and even had aimed in front of my musk ox and the gust carried it back a bit further then i cared for but it was still a lethal shot...just took a bit longer for my animal to expire so we worked the other musk ox for Bob and mine laid down next to his and well that is how far apart they expired from each other as you were not going to move these animals around they weigh 800+ pounds

we snuck up on one that was basking in the sun his horns were broke off on one side so we passed on him but what massive animals they are

here is a little slide show of some more pictures i took click on the picture to bring it up

Stick and string is the only way to go! I agree that would be tough to kill a ox with one though. Are they agressive? Will they charge like a buff? I am heading down in about 3 weeks for my first scouting trip. Taking the GSP with me.

If you draw post it here so we can all share in the agony/excitement of drawing a tag! My wife says she does not understand why I get so excited, they just dont understand! :D

Our results in Oregon come out in mid-June. Some elk, some deer, all antelope, sheep, goats, spring bear are all tags.

You asked about last year, here's mine.

You truly are a Lucky Guy!!! I've never seen an elk on a semi-flat piece of ground.......around here they only grow on the sides of mountains!!! And there is that inverse porportional thing going where they get bigger the farther from your truck/atv. After the last one I had to pack out, I'm just holding the next one at gun point and making him walk back to the truck.....either that or carry the salt & pepper with me and eat him where he falls! :P

Just put in for my first Moose & Bison Tag - won't know until July. If I get the draw, it'll be my first big game hunt ever - figured might as well go for the biggest creature (other than a Grizzly - too afraid if I miss, I'll expire on the spot.... :( )

What a coincidence. I was just emailed from a friend asking if I'd like to do a Wyoming elk bow hunt. An elk hunt has been a far fetched dream of mine. So this would be great. As a newbie, could you answer a few questions for me? A little background ...the offer came from my friend's business acquaintance whose family owns a 150,000 acre ranch/outfitter . There are 3 (maybe 4) of us who would like to do this trip together. We will apply for preference points. What are the odds (or how does it work) that all 3 or 4 of us will get a tag for the same year. We want to go together. http://www.wyoadventures.com/index.html

If appling in wyo.is takes about three years to draw you can buy just points from I beleive june to august. So you might try like my brother-in-law from there is having me do buy a point for two years and the third year apply for draw and you should draw.

I drew a hair tag for what's called the High Desert unit, a big part of the se corner of Oregon. There are a fair no. of animals, but it's alot of square miles. A couple of hunting buddies drew it too so sounds like we'll work it together.

Is it October yet?
