One last chukar hunt - closing day

Post by Shagrunner » Fri Feb 01, 2008 11:39 pm

Me and the 3 "kids" set out for one last try for the devil birds.

Sadie, my 9 month old wasn't quite sure what this was all about.

We started straight up the mountain. She kept checking back as if to ask, "Are you sure you really want to do this?
Image

Eventually we got to the top. Sam, my 3 yr old was wondering what took us so long. He was come back to check on us.
Image

It got a little breezy up on top.
Image

Ah, how refreshing.
Image

Sam is always quick to let us all know he is "Top Dog" in our pack.

Chukar country can be pretty rugged, a lot of ups and downs.

The snow can be like razors between the dog's pads.

But through it all, getting above those rascals is the #1 goal.

If they're not up there, we come back down and hunt in the junipers.

Zoey, my 8 month old started have problems with ice build-up after a couple of hours.
Image

But she was more that game to keep on hunting.
Image

At times the show got pretty deep, especially down in the gullies and draws.
Image

But then we got to go back up to the top again where the wind had blown all the snow away.
Image

Sometimes the dogs have more sense that we do. Zoey knew when it was time to head back to the truck and made a beeline for it.
Image

It only took a matter of seconds before Sadie bought into that idea and made her own beeline.

I found Sam safe and warm curled up in his kennel wondering when the rest of us would have enough sense to call it a day.

Unfortunately we didn't get any birds. I don't know if it was due to too much snow, too much wind or too much inexperience. But now we turn our thoughts to field trialing, training and next year.

We're already planning our scouting trips so we'll know where to find those wiley chukar next season.

Thanks for watching.

Nice pics Jeff.
Sorry we didn't have a chance to get out. Don't give up the Chukars are there, you have all next year to find them.

Great pictures! Looks like a great day out.

Mav......
We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare.
And in return, dogs give us their all. It's the best deal man has ever made.
