Need 50 to 100 yard range pointing breed
Any pointing breed fit this style? Looking for a friend who road hunts blue quail and only gets the dog out when quail spotted. A started dog young would be his first choice. He has the money if that motivates a seller.

Consider a spaniel.

Good point but shooting is easier with a pointing dog.
But if he looks around, he can find an individual Wirehaired Pointing Griffon adult that meets the criteria. Or other breeds, though a Griffon is a nice dog. He should be looking for an adult individual with those characteristics rather than a specific breed. There are always more good dogs than there are good homes (unfortunately), and he can find the adult he wants if he takes his time.

He could easily find a closer working GSP that would stay in the hundred- yard range. In fact, I have a few.
I am not quite sure how that type of hunting would work.
Do you drive around until you see the bird and then let the dog out? The dog points, you flush and shoot the bird and send the dog to retrieve?
I never seen blue quail so I don't know how that works. I have hunted pheasants in road ditches with close working dogs.........Cj

A lot of shorthairs don't range that far.

I'm in the camp of closer working GSP's or pointing dogs in general are made. You work them close and it can work . Here in NY covers I hit may be as small as a couple acres .Different areas of the country may require a special 4 leg companion. I have had two closer working shorthairs and loved the way it worked. I kept them close in the beginning and they would follow the pace I set . Now with older legs and a GSP that likes to stretch out a little I'm good !
When I had younger body parts I loved to have them out in front working at a nice clip between 35 & 75 yards or 105 feet & 225 feet .Take a tape out and measure that distance in the briars & brambles of upstate NY and it looks a lot further then you think. For me I love to hear the bell and see the dog work and nothing prettier then a point in the thick stuff !
As always I follow with Just my humble opinion ~

A friend is a professional trainer and gap owner and breeder. She has two started GSP's that are nice, biddable, close working GSP's that would work well for your friend. One year old male and female. She is located in Missouri. Let me know if you would like her contact information and she can answer more specific questions, MH, pedigree etc.,

Re: Need 50 to 100 yard range pointing breed
This area can be intimidating for a majority of folks, they dont like to walk and will road hunt that way. Cruise back roads until they see a covey, jump out and go after them. If thats an accurate description, he may be better served with a Springer Spaniel.
Another variation that I occasionally do. I call tank jumping. Go to a stock tank and hunt around it. A Springer would work well for that also.
Ran into a guy a few years ago using a beagle.

Agreed on the closer working GSP, mine worked close, which was great for grouse hunting.
