Our UT test

Post by Munster » Mon Aug 19, 2013 8:44 am

It was a very good day and we had a very good judging team.I also have a very nice dog to make me look good. But here is how the day unfolded. We were able to earn a 204 Prize I

Max and I getting ready fro the field
Image

When I cut Max loose, he decided to make a 400 yard cast! Never had this happen before, and instead of cutting his legs out from under him right away, I froze. Judge asked if this was his normal run and I said "Yup!" It was hilly so this added to my anxiety. I have lost sight of my dog! Then I hear, "We have a point". Im not kidding, he was a good 300-400 yards. Now, I was praying that he held it! That is a long way and we are going up and down hills. SO I see him...........then I dont...............see him, he is still pointing. I am thinking that this could make up look real good or real bad! HE held it,as he should, until we go there!
Image

Had 5 bird encounters. This is one of them. Kinda neat, you can see the chucker getting up. Funny thing is I was told to kick the birds up. Sooooo, I guess i took it to literal or I was just nervous. Because after the 3rd bird I was told to stop kicking them because they thought I knocked one or two out! When I got back there were some comments about some NFL teams needing lace kickers.
Image

Retrieve. I wont bore you with all the field pics, you all have been there.
Image

Duck search was next after lunch. Here we are just getting instructed.
Image

The send off. What is the worst thing that could happen? Max found the duck in about a minute 30. They had to dispatch it.He brought it in and was resent. 5-7 minutes later, he found the other duck! :multi:

Feather drag, nothing out of the normal here.Judge did comment on how he has wheels when he does anything.

Last thing was the heel and the steady to blind and marked ret. I didnt really feel great about the stakes going down hill, was worried about slipping and also was worried teh down hill would make Max forge ahead. So I over compensated and almost cost us some points. But we got through it.

Pretty much glad it is over and we are all ready to hunt. The plan is to make a run at VC, if we get it great, if we dont Max is retired to the good life of hunting dog and family friend. He has earned it in my book. :D
I need to also thank the handful of more experienced trainers that helped give me the confidence to get this done. That also help guide me on how to handle my dog better and make us a better team. We also cant get this stuff done without the support of our spouses. I really thank him for the countless hours of driving, getting yelled out for not launching the bird fast enough or being captain obvious when things go wrong. OH, and my camera man rocks too!

I am sure it will be just fine for you. Kelly is a great place to train/test. I didnt get to see you train, but I am sure you and your pup will do fine and have a great time.

Ms. Cage. I hope so to. The things we have going for us right now are that because of our JGHV training we know how to run binds. Because of JGHV, our obedience is pretty tight, so I dont think honor by bind will be an issue. I am not sure about double marks. But we are training for HRC stuff now soooooooooooo, that may help.
So, that leaves backing. When we hunt, he stops when he sees another dog on point. But I am not 100% sure if it is the dog or the scent. We will see.

Funny things is again, because of JGHV I never sent him on a duck search with a shot. So these last bits of training and the test were the first time he got sent with a shot. But he just knew not to leave until told. I learned the value, to me anyway, of not training with the shot. My first dog wont leave if there isnt a shot.

BTW, if anyone need to run a UT there is a opening in Hawkeye. I canceled my run for this weekend. Sure would be nice if someone took it.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Big congratulations. That is a great day and shows NAVHDA dogs are adaptable.
The best part of training is seeing the light come on in your little prot'eg'e.

Thanks for that posting - it was awesome to see all the stages. I too, was waiting with baited breath to see if Max was going to mess things up (or if you were!). So glad to see you guys made it through!

They have a way of giving you a pucker factor on test day. I had no reason to think he would move off of that bird, but on a test, you wonder. I had a wonderful group walking with us and some great gunners. I just dont think they were expecting to have to sprint on the first birds. Especially being a Munsterlander. Blew that myth out of the water!

The chucker kicking was a riot too!

I do not understand NAVHDA, as in all the rules etc, congrats! Seems like a lot of work!
