Iddy-Biddy Brag

Post by GrayDawg » Mon Mar 29, 2010 9:16 am

My 11 month old GSP pup earned her AKC Junior Hunter title on Saturday in Plainfield, CT
at the Irish Setter Club of New England's Hunt Test.

This was a VERY tight course- almost too tight for my little female. She had 3 legs towards her
JH title and it was almost as if she knew. She broke away & took the woodline about 175 yards
before I turned her with a whistle before she left the breakaway field. She then turned into the cover
and began hunting hard. We had just about caught up to her and she had her first find- Katy handled it
steady through shot of my .209 blank pistol and then came to heel before I positioned her to send her on.

It seemed as though the find REALLY fired her up- she was running with a bell, so when she took to the timber
on the edge of the fields, I just let her do her thing. One of the judges commented to me "you have one hot little
bitch there"
and just then Katy re-appeared from the woodine off to our side, located us- then screamed to the front.

We made it to the birdfield and she began quartering up a lazy ridge and went on point at the top up by the road.
It took me a minute and a half to get there- but she held point like a champ. It was a big 'ole fat hen quail who wanted
to run rather than flush- but I finally got her up and Katy held again through the shot of my blank pistol.

I again called her to heel, she again came to my left side & I sent her on in another direction. At this point, I didn't
need her to find any more birds. I actually didn't want her to. However, 50 yards into her cast (wind blowing left to right)
Katy did a Hard fishtail left while on a dirt road and locked up amidst a dust cloud she created when her back feet slid
to a halt. We worked that bird & the judge told me "you're golden- pick her up". I looked at my watch- I had her down for
a total of 11 minutes.

She handled like a champ- but I was reminded why I didn't like that area...... way too tight. I had to handle her carefully
so as to keep her on the course, and I typically try to keep my mouth shut as much as possible when my dog is down.
She finished with 10's in Hunting & Bird Finding Ability and 9's in Trainability & Pointing.

I know it's small potatoes, but it's her first field accomplishment nonetheless.
