GSP Field Dog Hall of Fame @ Grand Junction, TN

Post by Blue Dawn Kennel » Sat Nov 29, 2008 8:07 am

Bob Thompson (some of you all know from the gsp crew will/might know) and ourselves were notified a few days ago that his dog 4xNC/NFC/NASDC/NSDC/FC/Reg. & Specie Champion Heide's Mighty City Slicker "Slick" will be inducted into the GSP Field Dog Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will take place in early Feb. at Grand Junction along with the Pointers and Brittanys. Bob will be attending the induction and Keith & I are going to try to make it as well. Another gsp dog elected is Kay VD Wildburg and the two people are John Rabidou and Parl Larson. Slick's picture already hangs @ Grand Junction in the Bird Dog Hall of Fame.

There just aren't enough words to describe Slick other than he was an extrodinary animal, who gave it his all every time we put him on the ground. He was extremely graceful and fluid in his cover of the ground and staunchness on birds that he found. Slick has passed on great things to many of his get, grandget, great & great grand get that also shows his potent presence to this day in them.

Slick is still greatly missed by ourselves as well as his owner Bob & boys!! He'll never be forgotten and has also be prestigeously inducted into the GSPCA Hall of Fame in Oct. of 2007 and I'm working on the info to send in for getting him inducted into the NGSPA Hall of Fame as well for 2009.

Way to go SLICK ole boy. We love and miss you and you deserve all that your still getting today.

Just got the catalog from the 2009 Inductions into the Field Trial Halls of Fame.

Here was Slick's write-up:

Heidi's Mighty Slicker "Slick", male, FDSB # 1352288 was whelped on 1/10/91m out of a mating of Sanjo Sin City Slicker & Heidi Ho-Pinehurst bred by Linda Nickerson of Overland Park, KS. Heidi's Mighty Slicker or "Slick" was owned by Robert B. Thompson of Strafford, MO, and handled to his wins by Keith Gulledge as well as ably scouted by Robbi Gulledge of Blue Dawn Kennels in Madison, KS.

The Field Dog Stud Book credits "Slick" with 37 wins and placements. In the fall of 1991 "Slick" took first in the Open Derby @ the Ozark GSPC trial and would follow this with four puppy/derby placements prior to winning the National German Shorthair Pointer Association (NGSPA) Region 5 Derby Classic and taking a 3rd placement in the NGSPA National Futurity. In 1993-1995 while finishing as an American Kennel Club Field Champion Slick had 14 all age placements which consisted of 12 wins and two 3rd placements.

In the spring of 1994 "Slick" won the NGSPA Region 3 Shooting Dog Championship which would start his career, ultimately ending with 10 American Field Championship wins. In the spring of 1995 "Slick" won the NGSPA Shooting Dog Championship, the National German Pointing Dog Association (NGPDA) All Age Championship, the NGSPA Region 4 All Age Championship and went runner up in the NGSPA Region 5 All Age Championship.

"Slick" won the NGSPA National Championship in 1997 and 1999, the National German Pointing Dog Association National Championship in 1998, the NGSPA Region 5 All Age Championship in 1997. Slick also had amateur championship wins with the 1996 National German Pointingg Dog Association Amateur Shooting Dog Championship and the 1998 NGSPA Quail Amateur Shooting Dog Championship. Slick went runner up in 5 championship all age stakes in 1997 and 1998. Slcik also won the 1995 German Shorthaired Pointer Club of America (AKC's GSPCA) All Age Championship.

"Slick" is the leading producer of Shorthair field trial dogs. The American Field records reflect that he has sired 32 winners with a total of 253 placements which include numberous championship wins. His AKC progeny report shows 18 AKC Field Champions, 5 Amateur Field Chamions, 2 AKC National Champions and 3 AKC National Gun Dog Champions.

I just spotted another National All Age Championship win in the 1995 National German Pointing Dog Association Championship that wasn't listed (my fault for not catching when was sent the draft).

We love you Slick and still miss you deeply!!! Congrats old man you deserved it!!!

It was a great presentation, I wish more GSP folks had been there. Slick was properly honored. You folks need to come next year, or visit there anytime you are going across I-40 or down I-55.

If we can get some more support, we can get our own wing for the Continental Breeds (GSP's, Britts, V's, Whems, GWP's).

Making into the HOF is a great accomplishment and Sick with out a dought belongs there, but just out of curiosity, there are dogs out there that have produced many more champions and have won many more championships. Why and how does Sick get in the HOF before they did? :?: :?:

Well Joe you know "Sick" getting into the HOF is in the books and paperwork or he wouldn't be in there. Obviously some of the dogs aren't being voted in that you seem to think should be. There are pleanty of people voting into that HOF @ Grand Junction. I didn't even know that "SLICK" was nominated and voted in until Don Kidd emailed me for pictures. I guess you just need to get busy writing up stuff and sending in to get whoever in you think needs to be in there.

That is a wonderful acomplishment for you and Slick.

Slick and Blue Max Spitfire are in the pedigree of a former dog of mine - a fine dog.

I would say the 7 National Championships did not hurt him Joe.

Not to mention the get and grand get that are NC's. Shake, Siren, Ace, Kate, Cutter, Jax... I know that there's more, I just can't think of 'em right now. Robbi?

Heck of a dog.... heck of a producer for the # of times he was bred. Of course it helps that those dogs were owned by people who could put them in the position to win!!!

Oh boy, my post was not intended to belittle or minimize Slick's accomplishments, like I said he belongs in the hall of fame, but with all the other dogs (Some with better records and some having produced even more champions), that also belong and only 2 dogs a year being inducted it is going to take 50 years to get them all in. It seems to me that before all the people that have seen and remember these other great dogs are gone, that maybe they should be looking to get them in also.

Robbi sorry for the type-o my “l” must have not been working that day, but I do have a very difficult time believing that you where not instrumental in getting him in, but like I said he does belon there.

The rest of you people read the whole post and also read the praises I have already written about Slick. Truly one of the finest dogs I have ever had the pleasure to watch.
