New AKC Master Hunter

Post by Friedelsheim » Sat May 06, 2006 11:18 am

On Saturday at the Wilderness Pointer Club in Orange, VA my dog Sundance Revelation (Thunder) finished his Master Hunter title. He had a stellar spring going 5 for 6 in Master Hunt Tests. He picked up his first leg the previous spring.

Congrats...! A MH Title is something to be proud of for sure. I hope to finish the MH this fall, right now focusing on Utility Test in June.

Stay the course...

Thank you all for your compliments. Thunder has been a pleasure to own and train.

Now it’s time to focus back on our fall Utility tests.

Cindy,
You and Retta will be fine. She is a consistent performer and will make it happen.

Friedelsheim - I noticed that you said he has six MH legs. Why did you choose to go right into Master? I know a lot of people do, just curious as to some of the reasonings for skipping SH.

Thanks again guys.

Ayres,

Starting at Master is more of personal preference. I can’t speak for the other folks that start there but I guess my reason is past experiences and the level of training that the group of folks I train with train at.

We talked about this Donnie and I think your reasoning is sound.... Why Test at a level lower than what your dog is trained too and risk making bad habits?!?! Run a broke dog with a pup and the pup "may" create bad habits in the broke dog, by busting their points, etc... When you have a good sound training program, there just doesn't seem to be a need to test at the lower levels and risk creating bad habits you will have to break later. Again, Congrats on the accomplishment and I will be making an effort to get down and train with you folks in the next few weeks now that Testing season is about wrapped up for the Spring.

When training for the upper level tests, Master, Am and Open Limited Gun Dog, Versatile Champion, etc. you really do need to run the dog with lesser broke dogs to full proof your training. You never know when your bracemate is going to do something stupid, so full proof your dog BEFORE you get to the tests.

In the upper levels you also have an obligation to your brace mate. To be a considerate handler. I have judged some tests that the dog work was very nice but the handler needed more work than the dog. So if you are an inexperienced handler it may be to your advantage to run in a low level. Just to get more experience. JMO

That was part of my reasoning for running Justus in JH before SH, even though he was already trained to SH level. When I started running SH, he probably could have run and passed MH. Running in the lower levels gave us both some good experience though, especially since he's the first dog I'm "in the game" with. Once when I was running a JH brace the judge even asked me why he wasn't already in Senior.

Ayres as a judge I wish more do owner/ handlers felt the way you do. I had a young man at the last test I judged came to the line with an E- collar on his dog. Then got in the field with out a blank pistol. I train for Master and run everything else. With any luck this next season I'll have my 4th Master dog. Good luck with your summer training. I'm judging for a Vizsla club in Oct. in Virgina.

Nice job Fried.

I'm on the same path as Ayres. It took me a so long to finish Junior because of heat cycles that I had a green broke dog for my last JH test. She pointed five birds steady to wing and shot, stopped to flush on a sixth and pointed a seventh just after time. She got all 10s and some nice complements from the judges. I'm looking forward to SH in a couple weeks and hopefully Master in the fall.

Which club and where in Va?? I may be running more test in Va. after the great hospitality and fun I had this weekend at Wilderness and might make it a point to hit this test. Nothing quite like Southern Hospitality to keep you coming back!
