GSP - drinking style
GSP - drinking style
I have my first German Shorthaired Pointer (2.5 yrs-old) and I'm just curious if my dog has his own style of drinking or if this is a common occurance with the breed.
Regular visits to the water bowl result in a trail of water when he leaves it. The area around the bowl looks like I just had Shamu the Killer Whale do a performance for the front row.
When he's very active and coming in for a drink, his whole muzzle is under water and he gulps the water down quickly.
Does your GSP drink like a sloppy drunk?

Drinking Style
Not all do it that way, but I have one that does. She puts her head all the way up to her eyes under water. It may be a good thing, she turns fifteen tomorrow.
I got one of those mats of rmuddy boots at a home improvement store and put the bowl in it and it does catch some of the water my dogs drip. I also place it in the kitchen on the linolium and that seems to help with clean up.

A fine avatar it is. I think it beats the Nebraska one!
Anyway, my setters tend to do the same thing, take a drink and half of it ends up on the floor. Then there's the one who must shove her nose straight into the bowl and paw at the water (see middle picture below). I keep a towel handy at all times for clean up. I had to quit using paper towels, it was getting to expensive!

All the male GSP's I've ever had, present pup included, submerge their faces up to their eyes and then some if they can in the waterbowl. Some stand in it too if they can. Then they leave the water trail all over. The part I get in trouble with is when they decide to put their wet face all over the first person they see. I'm use to doggie slobber, so it don't bother me. However, when it's the mrs all dressed up or a house guest that's not a dog person, it can get ugly.
On the other hand, our female is a water licker. No matter how hot she is, she will not submerge her face in the waterbowl. She's a great water dog but the drinking thing is kinda quirky with her.
